New Rings and Bases?

Hello, I am looking for some advice. I am planning on purchasing a new scope for my 7mm Rem Mag (Howa action). I have narrowed the choice down to either the Leupold VX-II or the Rifleman (Rifleman is the same scope as the VX-I, just marked different). I like the warranty and the clarity is much better than I am used to with my old Tasco.

Which brings me to why I am posting. Should I be considering replacing the rings and bases?

This rifle was purchased and given to me by my father when I was 17 (now I am 33). As I was not involved in the purchase, I am unsure of the make of bases and rings, but they are made of Aluminum.

If any of you recommend replacing the bases and rings, what type should I look for. Not looking for anything fancy, I don't have a ton of money. I do value strength, but I don't need windage screws or a a disconnect system.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!!

Well the Leupold Mark 4 rings are pretty good for an "off the shelf" item. I know that one of my rifles had a set of Warn rings on at one time, which were pretty good also. I would give Wolverine supplies a call, I have a set of A.R.M.s rings on my M1A and they are quite good,he can also get PRI stuff, very nice.

I personally wouldn't overanalyse the situation. Any reason to suspect your current setup has failed you, or caused any problems? ( changing zero, etc.)
If you go to change, I don't think it is necessary to spend a ton of money to get a decent setup. I've used Weavers, Leupolds, Redfields, and Talleys Lightweights with no issues. I intend to try out a set of Burris Zee rings on Weaver bases for my next scope. Simple, strong, inexpensive and highly recommended. I think they are about $40 with bases.

I actually have suspected some change in zero, but it wasn't consistent. So, I suspected my wood stock. After removing it, I found some cracks around the action. I have since replaced the wood stock with a synthetic stock (Bell and Carlson), but I have not had a chance to shoot with it.

I was just wondering if I had to replace the bases and rings with the change in scope. I don't see anything wrong with what is on the rifle right now except for the cheap TASCO scope that is on it. I want something better!

I beleive the Howa actions used the same mounts as Remington M700's???

if this is the case, get yourself a pair of Talley rings from Corlane Sports (#

another good option is the Leupold dual dovetails

I've used this exact set up on several rifles with no probs at all!

Considering your description of your gun I would not get too extravagent in my purchase of high end rings and bases like Leupold Mark 4 that would almost equal the cost of your scope. Look carefully at your existing set up and check for signs of fatigue, cracks, stripped and damaged screws. If all looks good then reuse what you have, if not I usually suggest Leupold (Or similar) Standard mount steel rings and bases( front dovetail and rear windage adjustment). These usually are the most value for strength and flexibility for centering your scope. About $69.00. Also to correct your original statement ,Icon about the Rifleman and VX1 being the same scope with different look...this is not quite true as the VX 1 has multi coat 4 coatings on the outside lenses while the Rifleman has standard coatings giving the VX 1 better light transmission. Hope this helps.

Hey great info! :D I had looked up the price of the Mark 4 rings and bases, but could not justify the cost. I have since inspected my current stuff and all looks good for now. If I find inconsistency in zero, then I will change out. Also, I think that I am either going to get the Leupold VXIII or the VXII. It all depends on my bonus
