Hey there. My wife and I both passed our exams this week and I am now in the process of researching for a couple of pistols. I would rather not get into the specifics of brand at this point.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a place/store within a couple of hours of Montreal or Ottawa where one could go and handle a few different models? Preferably somewhere where the sales people aren't total a$$holes.

As one newbie to another welcome to shooting. I just got my R-PAL in January. However thanks to being a member at a local commercial range I've been able to shoot since last Fall.

If there's a range where you can "rent" a variety and try them I urge you to make the trip and spend the day at such a range. Holding them is one thing but it means little compared to being able to hold AND SHOOT them. Guns that feel good in the store may can easily end up feeling terrible when shot. Typically you buy the ammo at an inflated price and that is the rental cost for using their guns to shoot the ammo. And generally you can shoot some with this pistol and some with that and get a good picture of what at least 1/2 a dozen different guns feel like over the course of an afternoon for maybe $100 each. It may or may not sound like a lot of cash to you but if it saves buying the wrong gun then it's money well spent. Take a notebook with you or a little dictating recorder and take notes on what each feels like or by the end of the day it'll all just be a blur.

And at some point try a couple of revolvers. I thought they just looked odd but after a few days of shooting at my own "rent a gun" range I decided to try a S&W model 19 just to see what they were like. I thought I'd hate it due to the odd grip shape that just didn't LOOK right. However I found it FELT just perfect and by the second cylinder of 6 rounds I was hooked. I was shooting tighter groups than I could manage with my own CZ Shadow and giggling to myself.

I've since added two .357Mag revolvers to my rapidly growing collection and love them both. A third for shooting .22 is on its way at this point. I've got my semis as well and love both styles equally.

The cool thing is that with you and your wife both having permits the guns can be shared. This means that some variety in the collection won't cost the world.
