Ok - so my RPAL should be in within the next 30 days, so I'm staring to look at what I should buy for the wife and I to start with.

I have fired a few of a buddies collection (.22LR, 9mm, 357, 40, 45 IIRC), but the wife has never fired a shorty before.

Both of us have smaller hands, so I'm looking for something that can accommodate that. I was thinking something in .22LR as it will be cheap to shoot and allow us to learn how to use it without having to deal with high recoil.

Anyone have any suggestions - I think I would like to get a semi.

One that caught my eye was the Sig Mosquito. I'm looking to keep the price at $500 or less and I'm not opposed to buying used.

Thanks!

The Ruger MK II / III are probably the most popular 22 pistols, with a lot of different models available. They'd be worth taking a look at. I have no personal experience with the Mosquito, but I've heard a lot of owners say that they are very fussy about the ammo they like to function properly.

I just ordered my first pistol. I went for the Ruger Mark III. Supposed to be very reliable and are very affordable. Biggest thing in my decision was price of ammo - can't beat .22 LR.

If you're stuck on .22 I don't have any suggestions for you as I've only used the Advantage Arms conversion kit for Glocks.

But if you're open to 9mm and up take a look at the S&W M&P models; they come with 3 different sized grips for accommodating different hand sizes.

I read nothing but bad things about mosquitoes, but I love mine and it's absolutely FLAWLESS with CCI Minimag (and has less than 1% failures with cheap wally federal .22). Everything else is a bust.

Get yourself a Ruger mark II or III (400-500$) and buy a norinco M213 in 9mm (99$) and you will have a lot of fun at a cheap price!

It's all about personal fit and feel. For a .22 semi you cant go wrong with a ruger mark ll or lll. For a 9mm its tough to beat a CZ75b for value.

Stay away from $99.00 Chinese knockoffs. Might as well shoot a Bic lighter.

I had the same dilemma, I decided on a Buckmark Camper .22. Shortly thereafter I bought an M&P9.

The buckmark IMO is a better pistol than a MKI or MKII but a MKIII/45 would have been my first choice had one been available when I "needed" to buy a pistol.....

I was able to fire a Buckmark, Walther P22, Ruger MKI & Ruger MKII before I made my decision.

Cheers

Get a Kimber Target(.22) because they are full size.

Under $500 I'd go with a Ruger MKIII. It will function flawlessly, but its rather fugly. For the $500-650 range, I'd go with a Hammerli Essex. I've owned one of these and they are super accurate and not picky with ammo at all. For just under $1000 I'd probably go with a Kimber 22 or a Sig P226 in 22.

I have owned a Browning Buckmark .22 for 15 years now and am very happy with it. It is fairly accurate and reliable. Nice weight and feel to it. I chose the Browning over the Ruger because of looks and feel, never regretted my decision.

I'd recommend the Browning Buckmark. There are just as many models to choose from as the Ruger, but the Browning looks infinitely better in my opinion. It's also more comfortable than the Ruger and has an excellent trigger.

Try a CZ 75 B in 9mm and buy the .22 Kadet kit...

you'll see, it's a very nice way to begin :D

you can shoot .22 and 9mm with the same frame and trigger
