New - Ruger Hawkeye vs Model 70

ruger are not anymore made in left hand version as the winchester model 70. if i had to choose that will be as the mkII the finish is way better but i do not have anymore any ruger. just zastava and tikka for me now.

Winchester. I’d say go with whatever you like better. In terms of features they’re basically the same (CRF, 3-position safety, etc). In my opinion, for what it’s worth, the Winchesters are better-made, have a better trigger (though making the trigger really nice requires a cheap spring kit upgrade), and I’ve found them to be more accurate. I think they’re lighter too, and the blueing is definitely way better. Like I said though, a lot of that is just opinion.

Count on bedding both rifles. It’s a crap shoot if they’ll shoot to their potential right out of the box. The featherweight is less desirable than the extreme weather for me. Ruger makes a good gun still. If I wanted walnut blued version it would be Ruger. Stainless synthetic would be the extreme weather. Triggers both would need work but nothing a good gunsmith couldn’t get down to 2.5# for under 100 bucks.

I have and really like both. I think the current models are pretty much equal overall. I'd say just go with the configuration you want in terms of cartridge, stock, barrel, etc.

Love both. Prefer the handling of the Hawkeye. Zero complaints.

That's my most boring take ever Haha.

The LC6 triggers on the Hawkeyes are really quite good. The stainless finish on the new ones is smooth and refined like a MkII again. The new Hawkeyes are as good as any 77 in the past. They've really upped their game.

I've personally found Ruger's to be better shooters out of the box. Winchesters usually need a good bedding job.

If I were looking at the two, a new Feartherweight would be my choice.
I have seen more than acceptable hunting rifle accuracy from both the Rugers and the Winchesters, but prefer the featherweight stocks.
If I wanted a target rifle I would look for a target rifle, not a hunting rifle, which these are.

Personally I would buy a Winchester model 70. They are well machined, have top notch bluing, decent wood. Come bedded from the factory and have a super smooth controlled feed bolt. For hunting a feather weight would be my choice, but any of the model 70s work. The model 70 is also available far more often.

I'm shocked at how many here are bedding or altering their triggers on model 70s. I've shot a new production Alaskan, and a few new feather weights. They shot great, and the triggers came in around 3lbs, and are better then most the triggers I've had the pleasure of shooting.
