I purchased my first 1911 this week, it is a used Ruger SR1911. I noticed when the slide is locked in the pulled back position the barrel has play in it. Infact I can move the end of the barrel (muzzle) back and forth about 1/8". When the slide is forward the barrel movement goes away.

Is this normal?

Thanks in advance.

From what you describe, yes, that is perfectly normal. When the slide is locked open, it's normal for the barrel to have a bit of movement. When the slide is closed, the barrel should not move at all. On some 1911s, the barrel may move a tiny bit with the slide closed... in fact this is one of the ways to test how tight a 1911 is. If yours doesn't move at all (a good 1911 shouldn't), it's a good sign!

1911 behaves like that, so as most single action pistols. That is the reason why they have a barrel link that allows this kind of movement. As the slide moves backward, empty cartridge is extracted and front of the barrel moves few millimeters up. As the slides moves forward to firing, the barrel levels in parallel with the axis of slide and sights. This is also true with CZ pistols to which the barrel link is slightly different as this is fixed with the barrel but with a slotted hole compared to the pivoted pin to a 1911.

No, No, No. This shows a very serious defect on the part of the firearm and you should sell it fro scrap metal right away.

Send it to me and I'll send you $50 for the metal's value!

LOL (It's fine, just shoot and enjoy!)
