Had this guy for a couple months now, but on the first visit to the range the Bushnell Elite Tac failed, and I was not impressed. New scope arrived Friday and today I got to put her all together and take her out.

Savage 10 Precision Carbine w/Sightron SII Big Sky 4-16x42.

The rifle is absolutely awesome, and lives up to it's name. Light weight, and short, but still a tack driver, at least with my handloads today. Obviously my first trip out was a disappointment at least till I realized it was the scope that was the issue.

Now I will say that as per usual the Savage is kind of lacking in the Fit and Finish dept. Flashing left over on the stock from the mold, and even on the cast bolt, but that is typical, and having owned several Savages before I kinda expected it. That said my Browning Xbolt which was the same price, is much better in that dept.

Of course this gun was not purchased to be a safe queen and the minor issues don't really matter that much. More importantly is how she shoots....

That Sightron scope is absolutely amazing for the money, and sighting this bad boy in was no problem. Got her into the red pretty quick and didn't want to waste my handloads getting her perfect so I proceeded to just shoot for groups to test my handload.

First 3 shot group fired - Hornady 55 Grain FMJ over 25 grains of Varget - 60 yards because it was far too windy to really test loads.

I had several different loads with those Hornady FMJ bullets, and a few with some 60 grain Vmax's, and they all shot as good or just a little worse than the above group, but all damn close. I don't think a single group was over half an inch, and I will have to go out to 100 then 200 to really determine which loads work best.

Anyways I actually had this gun up on the EE to sell as I was pissed with my first range visit, and damn am I happy it didn't sell!!!

I am keeping this one, at least for awhile. ;)

Good on ya for not giving up on it after the first trip. As you stated Savages aren't pretty, but they're definitely robust enough to handle field & bench abuse.

Lots of choices for reloading in .224 Cal range, you could be quite busy trying them all :D

I have one in .308. It's actually my first rifle, baring my grandma's (yes, grandma's) ruger 10/22, 1977 "year of american civil liberty" edition. She died when I was young, and apparently would sit on the deck varminting with her rum and coke, hehe. yea Grandma.

anyway, I also put a bushnell elite tac on it. I'm into ballistics, so made sure I got something half long range. It sighted in in 4 rounds with a rough calib by removing the bolt for a bore sighting. The screws all shook loose after my first sighting, but I've since loc tightened all screws and it was snug after that. My last go with it and a buddy (who I'm sure is a better shot) was rocking dependable groups at 160'. He managed to cut the wire holding our gong up (and luckily called the shot before hand), hehe. I'm using some Hornady z-max 168g that i picked up second hand for $.9/r. I have yet to spend some good time on the range mapping it's performance as most of the shooting this season was pretty unorganized, so I'm looking forward to getting intimate with it.

I did a ton of reading on rifles in this range, and just kept coming back to the savage. My decision was based on reviews, but I'm so far, very happy with it. I'll be hunting deer with it this season, and have actually put a Vortex SPARC red dot on it as it suites the hunting style were doing. I cheaped out a bit because I'll probably use the red dot on all types of guns as my collection grows. That being said, the Vortex is magnificent for the price ($208 from Tactical Products Canada - thanks guys).

One concern though. Reviews are saying that the trigger will lock out (safety mech) if the bolt is closed to fast/hard. This might be a problem, as I imagine I'll be pretty excited on my first rifle hunt.

I picked up a 10 round mag from NR magazine; hasn't arrived yet, but it should be neat. Practical? we'll see. Bad ass looking? uh huh.

Regards,

He he I just about bought that rifle but decided I didn't want another project. The price was certainly right though. Glad to see you kept it! Those hornady fmj pills are awesome shooting little bullets. Try some ladder tests at 300 yds on a calm day with a handful of match and varmint bullets, there's so much that will shoot tight groups with varget in a good .223.

Regards,

The trigger locking up is something that can happen with the Accu-Trigger. It's due to a very sharp, shallow sear engagement, which gives you a great clean crisp trigger pull, but if it's dirty, or set to light, it may trip if you close the bolt really hard. Note, I say may... and not always. Just keep the sear clean, and you should be fine. If it does lock up, it's meant too, as a safety mechanism. Just re-#### the bolt and lower the bolt handle gently, get your shot off. Now go home and clean it...

If it becomes an issue for you down the road, you can replace the Accu-Trigger with a Rifle Basix SAV-2 model. It's awesome, gives you a great, even better trigger pull, with none of the sear tripping fun of the factory trigger. Enjoy your rifle, I have the same one on my wish list, to complement my Model 10 FP.

Had the same issue with my Savage 12 accu-trigger kept tripping when I closed the bolt. It got annoying so I called Savage. They directed me to their warranty gunsmith who is 2 hours north of Toronto. He replaced the mechanism had no issues after. However as my shooting ability improved I started tinkering with the rifle. In comes Rifle Basix SAV-2 trigger. Holly trigger Batman! Amazing trigger worth every penny. Oh and as for savage, people smirk when I tell them its a savage until they see my target at 200 yards.

Even if i got in excess of 30 308 rifles, my Nemesis being the most accurate, my old Savage Model 12 in 308 26 inch barrel is still one of my most accurate rifle... Like they say, ugly but sure is one of the bang for the buck on the market... Congrat on your rifle... JP.

Nemesis?

I love my savage and it's far from ugly, there is one more piece to add to the puzzle and then I might do a thread on what I had to do it in order to get it soo awesome lol (I kinda tacticooled the ####e out of it). Anyways with regards to the comments about it being ugly I think that is just something the remington lovers say to make themselves feel better lol.

anyone removed the action from the stock?? im wondering if the action contacts the stock and bedding completely or if theres only six contact points like with the remmy 700's?
