New Savage 11/111 concern

Hi folks.

My buddy just got a new savage and brought it over last night to sight it in. He cycled a couple rounds through and everything seemed fine but after the first shot it was really hard to get the bolt open. We shot a couple more rounds and it kept doing it so I grabbed some grease and added a little to see if it would help but a couple more rounds and the samething. So we switched to a different brand of ammo and that didn't change it either. So I was just wondering if anyone had an idea of why this happening and if we should be concerned ? Thanks :)
 
Could be alot of stuff.

Without a doubt the first thing I'd do is clean it like an operating room. Disassemble the bolt and look for any burr's or a left over bit of metal from the factory.

Next would be to test fire it again and see if the problem persists.

BTW did the fired cases show any kind of markings that were out of the ordinary ? Really flat primers, long scratches on wall ? Pics to if you need more help after the cleaning.

clean it X2, seen this problem before, guy sent it to a gunsmith just to find out he needed to clean his gun. You can find grease in the chamber and as the round expands the grease can make it more difficult to extract. If there are funny looking marks on the case maybe theres an issue with the chamber and it could use a polish, but start by cleaning that thing till you can eat out of it.
 
What caliber?

My savage .308 runs American eagle and nosler .308 perfectly fine but I have a slight difficulty as you mention to extract norinco and surplus 7.62x51
 
i have a savage trophy hunter xp in 30-06n w/ acutrigger. same gun pretty much. bring a bolt action rifle there is not a whole lot that can go wrong in theory. when u get the action to open after firing does it eject eh cartridge properly? does it chamber the next cartridge properly? i had a problem with mine when i bought it chambering the next properly. had to bend the flanges on the mag a lil bit to work smoothly. if this is not the case i could see this as a warranty issue with fitment from the factory and would talk to savage. hope his helps.
 
^agreed. I say before even cleaning it, look to see if there is any excess grease inside. Then check base screws for protrusion. If neither exist, take that thing back, chamber is likely out of spec. Sometimes $hite slips past QA...
 
More details required...do you mean the bolt handle does not move, or does it lift but not pull back. I've seen several recent savages that have very poor primary extraction. Either the removable primary extraction cam is undersized or the bolt body is a shade too long. Are you positive it's clean, assembled correctly and the proper caliber/ammunition is being used. Not to be insulting but many novices think ammunition is more interchangeable than it is.

Hmmm...
I know internal capacity measurements and brass thickness can vary from manufacture to another but commercial ammunition should fit within a specific specification external case wise...

@OP any odd scratches or wear marks on the bolt?
 
If it was cheep ammo that could easily be the problem. "mfs" or other such value priced rounds are not worth the aggravation .


grab a caliper and measure the cases on the ammo. i have seen cheep ammo that is out quite a biiit from factory spec and can easily jam in a tight chamber.
 
Well it's a 300 win mag and at first he shot Winchester ammo and than I had some Federal Premium that I use for hunting and it did the same thing as well. I'll have him take a look at the bolt and we gave it a good cleaning. Going to be firing it next week so ill let you know how it goes. Thanks for all the feed back!!!
 
In addition to cleaning (esp the chamber), greasing the primary extraction cam on the back of the bolt will make it work much better.

Scrub the chamber. Under pressure some lubricants solidify and can trap dust, debris which will hold onto the casing and make extraction difficult to impossible. My brake throws a lot of crap back, so I've got to be on top of it, if I don't eventually I'm banging he bolt handle with a club so I can clean the chamber and repeat the circle.
