New Savage 110 Ultralight Elite Rifle Carbon Fibre MDT Stock

I've handled that exact rifle last month, it's nice. Keep in mind the chassis is $1900 CDN and the barrel is $1500 CDN alone

I put the HNT26 chassis on a Savage 110 Carbon Predator, essentially they stole my idea

No doubt the stock and barrel are expensive on their own.
I'm impressed with how far MDT has come in a short time... the weight savings and thermal qualities of carbon fibre make a lot of sense for a fall winter hunting rifle.

That’s a lot of cash for lipstick on a pig

Funny you should say that... I've always found Savage rifles a bit ugly looking, this rifle in this chassis looks nicer then any other configuration I've seen.

People generally like Savage for good price to performance.... this unit is pricey and bound to turn off traditional thinkers.

I had a savage ultralight chambered in 7 PRC, cost me around $2000, put about 200 rounds through it and then sold it for $1200.

There’s a couple on the EE right now for 14, 15 hundred.

Also I’ve owned a few proof barrels, didn’t find anything special about them either.

So ,it’s a cheap Savage with a mediocre CFW barrel and an expensive stock.
MDT has other chassis for a third of the cost, and lighter than the one advertised.

You could probably do a full custom with similar options and less cost.

It's definitely in custom price range.
I'm not the biggest fan of chassis guns for hunting but thanks for pointing out that MDT has lighter and cheaper options!

I'm impressed by their offerings.

Can you tell us about the level of accuracy you were getting?

It was a ways back and I’m after having owned so many different rifles… it was chambered in 7 PRC, maybe one of the first 110 ultralights out in that caliber.
Got it from Gun Dealer, then got 4 or 5 box’s of Hornady ammo from Optic Precision?? Pretty scarce stuff.

That shot an average of 2 MOA
Hand loaded a few different bullet/ powder combinations and couldn’t get it to shoot better than 1 1/2 MOA.
Thought maybe the cheap stock wasn’t helping but sold the gun before any upgrades.
Also had a couple of .223 proof barrels that wasn’t the hottest , but who knows maybe I was expecting to much from such expensive barrels.

You can probably build a CFW barred rifle on a Solus action, trigger tech and come in around the same price as the Savage

I only have two Proof barrels but they both shoot well

here's a 9 shot group at 426 yards with the 105gr Amax in my 6mm Creed.

and here's my 9 year old's first time shooting his new Savage 6 ARC off the bench at 100M

That’s awesome shooting, by both of you.
Maybe it was just the barrel /chambering combo for me, maybe the crappy stock, I don’t know but it was definitely nice to hold.
I liked the 6.5 PRC round much better.

Sorry Can-down, rereading I realized I replied to you and 45 without quoting both of you. My bad.
No, it’s not in custom price range. Source a barrel, custom action, trigger tech, and any chassis that light and add it up assembled. Your numbers are not updated. Also, MDT has less useful chassis options that are indeed cheaper, but there is not much competition that stacks up to the HNT26. For looks buyers, the cheaper chassis option do the trick, but but as someone who has spent hundreds, yup not an exaggeration, of hours behind one, the higher end options do a better job. As far as being lipstick on a pig, considering the other issues that Savage has had in their “elite” rifles with pressure using factory ammo, you have a point.

Shows you what I know.... :)

$4500 is more then twice what my most expensive rifle cost..... I'm surprised to hear that a guy can't get into a basic custom rifle for $4500 these days, but not surprised that to match the Savage MDT combo as shown would cost more then what Savage is listing it at which I think is what you are saying.

I think I need more understanding of this whole heavy barrel/light weight carbon wrapped barrel stuff...I'm not sold on them at all yet, especially with the premium attached.
Been around for a while in the rimfire circle, not much to go sideways there. Basically pencil barrel, wrapped up the middle with CF, but yeah, rimfire stuff...
Centerfire, I just don't get it, not sure how you can turn a pencil barrel into a heavy steel barrel and match the performance? Heat is heat, the skinny steel sleeve is going to burn up regardless of what it's wrapped in, different materials expand at different rates, wrap it in CF or aluminum, or whatever else, is going to introduce inconsistencies.

Solus action. $1280
IBI CFW barrel $ 1400
MDT chassis. $ 1680
TT trigger. $. 280
So basically the same price as the savage .
I’ve been planning on this build for a few months now , with a tac 21 chassis. So it would be around $1000 less for me.

Tools to assemble are around $200 and it’s easy as pie. Lol

I guess the question is , is the savage action and trigger better or equal to the Solus action and TT trigger

I think it’s the appeal of a lightweight hunting rig that can also be used at the bench.
Problem is , there’s no way of telling how hot the barrel gets as you can’t feel the heat.
And they look cool .

I'm a famous savage hater, but it's kind of amazing how reasonable they are able to get the prices on these and their other carbon fibre barrel rifles. Lots of features for the money on their higher end stuff

Really makes you think about the markup on the components at retail

Makes sense that the Savage package would be in the zone price wise, in fact given Savage's reputation for value priced shooters, I'd expect the pacakge to be cheaper then builidng it a la carte.

I stand corrected. I’m not sure how an 18” carbon barrel version is worth $1K US more than the 26” Savage 110 in the ACC chassis that costs similar to the HNT26. The MSRP is $2200-ish for the other one.
