Bought myself a new rifle for Christmas and went to the range yesterday to try it out.

Tried 4 different loads with 110 gr Hornady Vmax with H4831SC

57.5gr, 58.5gr, 59.5gr and 60.5 gr.

The load data I have for 110 gr jacketed bullets lists 58-62 grains of H4831. I planned on working from .5 grain over minimum to .5 grain under maximum but I could not fit more that 61 grains in the case, so I started with .5 grain under minimum and finished at 60.5.

I only had a 4.5x scope available to me at the time, but couldn't wait to try it out. The lowest load provided the best group, but I will try again with a higher magnification scope when I can. (after Christmas)

I really like the accutrigger, I think it is a very nice trigger for factory.

Here are the results @100 yards with a low power scope and shakey shooter.

All are 5 shot groups with the exception of the first being a 4 shot.

1" squares on target.

Id try 0.3 above and below your 57.5 gr load where the pics are in order. You may find better result with heavier bullets on these powders. I run 140gr Hornady BTSPs with H or I4350 with great success. The 110s may like a faster powder, say I4064, I3031 or varget...... A whole lot of powders run well in the ol 270. Good shooting.

Thanks for the reply. I loaded up another 20 rounds last night. 5 @ 57.2gn, 5 @ 57.5gn again and 10 at 57.8gn. I'll hit the range on Wednesday and see if I do any better. I also backed off my crimp a little bit, I think my first attempt may have been a little tight. I've been loading 44 mag and 9mm for a bit, but this is my first time loading for necked rifle cartidges.

I chose H4831 because I could find load data for just about every projectile using that powder. This is a pretty dense powder too, I'm surpirsed how much a kernel or two tips the scale. I will try a something with a little faster burn rate next time around. I also need to pick up a few different (heavier) projectiles to try as well.

If you shot them in the order of light to heavy, it might be worth repeating the heaviest load again first. Just in case heat or fatique played an influence on accuracy.

I was back at the range on Wednesday working up loads again. this time it was hornady 150 gr sp with H4831. I loaded 40 rounds 10 of each 52, 53, 54 & 55 grains of h4831. I shot 5 shot groups starting with the lightest load. there were no pressure signs at all. for the second set I shot my groups starting with the hotter loads working back down to the lighter ones.

55 grains provided the tightest groups of the day on both sets of 4 groups.

I'm not sure if I can expect much more from a factory gun. I may do a little
work on the stock before I go back to the range and see if I can shrink the 55 grain group a little more. this is a hunting rifle only, but I'd like to be as accurate as I can with it. plus I'm really enjoying this part. :)

Outstanding! Trigger time can provide some more. But you have a shooter there. Stick to the fundamentals and just shoot it. All the details (bedding, reloading practice, match prep) may help with wierd shots or provide 0.1 or 0.2moa. Just enjoy that rifle and knock down some game. BTW, sometimes the mental edge will bring back those darn un-cooperative shots. Can't count how many times I get a good string going and blow off a shot. Well done!
Elky.

That 52 grns target is sure interesting.
You wouldn't per chance be canting the rifle slightly?
Those breaking paper holes sure are sweet.
Mickey Mouse ears....... :)

it's possible. that was the first group I shot after 3 fouling rounds. I shot those groups in order, then worked back down from 55 grains stopping at 53. I didn't shoot the last 5 rounds of 52 grain loads as all the other groups
were fairly consistent in size for each given load. I broke the remaining 52 grain loads down today to be reloaded. it was pretty damn cold and windy that morning, so I'm sure operator error may have played a part.

I was at the range again on Sunday with the .270 working on loads for 140gr Hornady SSTs. I had a few good groups but this was the best, 10 rounds @100m in 18 minutes. I'm very surprised the group did not open up a lot more from barrel heat. I usually try to space my shots more than 5min apart when testing loads but it was cold and miserable Sunday and I was tired. I haven't measured the group but the grid is 1". the guy on the right was the 9th shot, I knew I pulled that one and was expecting it to be much further outside the group.

edit: the load was 57.5 gr h4831, WLR, 140gr SST and neck sized win brass.

Quit while your ahead.Sure can not expect any better than that.I would have liked to see that smile, that should have been on your face!Bet its still there.

Great shooting. My brother has the package gun in 30-06 and gets the same results. I couldn't believe how well it shot with factory ammo and I cant wait to see what it will do with reloaded rounds.:cool:
