Not sure if this has been posted before. Picked up a new center feed Savage in 308 and am amazed at how well this mag system runs. Almost as smooth as an AI set up. The mags are built really tough and the base is cast metal. Grossly overbuilt.

The mag will handle OAL of 3.00" so you can build a 6.5 Mystic or 6.5-284 or seat VLD bullets way out there.

I know that at least one stock maker in the US is going to be making some tactical, varmint and hunting stocks to take advantage of this mag. Not sure if IanR is planning any new products for this family of Savage.

With the accutrigger and a bit of work on the bolt, it really is a smooth operator. Accurate too.

Just need some extended mags and this will be a great tactical platform.

Here are some pics of the mag and rifle. I like how it is flush and smooth with the bottom of the stock. Easy on the hands when hunting. The front release is very positive and the mags drop free. With a full mag, it does require alot of effort to click the mag in place but no issue if the bolt is opened.

As you can see from the side views, this mag is center feed and very well built. Lips are smooth and the whole thing is rigid (overbuilt actually). The base pad is a machined cast metal part and adds quite a bit to the weight (again over built but would survive alot of drops on concrete - why? I have an idea...).

I put in my 6.5 Mystic loaded to 2.90"OAL and there is still room for more. Of course, I cannot cycle the rd (rifle is 308) so can't tell if there would be any feeding issues at this or longer length. The mag will hold a 3.00" rd. Fun, Fun, Fun.

Hard to see in the shot of the action but that rd is indeed in the center of the action and has a straight shot into the chamber. Feeding has been super smooth and cycling loaded ammo is simply a function of how fast you can run the bolt. Empties of course are a no brainer. Very impressed.

If someone will make extended mags, this set up has alot of potential. The part that contains the mag release is also a cast part and way over built. Guess what the trigger guard is made from. yep, cast too.

Would survive all manner of loading and handling abuse. Me thinks someone at Savage is thinking beyond the hunting needs as these parts are grossly overbuilt.

Wouldn't surprise me to see their LE models coming out very soon using this mag system and 10rds mags. I know there will be tactical stocks to accomodate this action by next year.

This is really going to make the tactical world sit up. accutrigger, awesome barrels from the factory, now a great mag system, soon to be quality stocks. I bet a full up rig will be equal or less then the models offered today.

That would be amazing value. Give this mag system a try. It is the next best thing to the AI chassis and mag set up. Yeah, that good....

Jerry, thanks for the report. While I've never been much of a magazine fan on a boltgun, it definitely apprears this system has plenty of merit and potential. It's great that Savage is using some ingenuity and not afraid to start something new.

For me, I hope they release a 6mmBR chambering in their new LRPV (Long Range Precision Varmint) rifle. I'm a definite buyer for that should they release one.

No. The action spacing is 0.12" longer on the Pheonix system than the short 10FP action. The long actions are the same lengths.

Any pics of the bottom of the receiver mag opening with the stock removed?

Cheers,
Rob

Pot metal cast parts have to be bigger to be as strong as their forged counterparts. Look at anything Ruger casts, huge ass parts and receivers for all their stuff........twice the size you can do the same with forged.
Unless there is some finish machining done to it, cast looks like #### too.

Exterior finish is very smooth, void free and 'colour' even. They are heavy for their size which is why I am leaning towards cast. The seam on the trigger guard is kind of another give away.

Price for cast is way cheaper then forged so that is probably the deciding factor. Little doubt that forged is stronger but how strong does a trigger guard have to be?

A bit of milling would bring the parts to a reasonable weight unless heavy is good.

Even with these heavy parts, the rifle is still very light at under 7lbs.

These rifles are now retailing for under $490. That is a smoking deal. Throw on a quality barrel if a factory pipe doesn't turn your crank, put in a stock and you are in the same price range as a factory Rem HB. Not bad at all.

PEIRob, with the mag out, just a big hole. All the attachment is done on the bottom plate. The mag does not touch the action nor stock in the mag well. could be why this plate is so strong.
