New savage heavy barrel question

I know there has probably been a lot of discussion already but what the heck. I have two questions for those of you have one of the heavy barreled bolt action savages with the accutrigger.

1) What type of accuracy did you get out of them ?
2) What was the best ammo you used ?

I've got one on the way and am looking forward to plinking and varminting and if I'm depressed some grousing too.;)

Because of variations in parts and the manufacturing process, almost every gun is slightly different. It's very possible that what one persons gun likes, yours won't.

Luckily rimfire ammo is cheap enough that you could buy almost every brand out there to find what works best in your rifle without going broke!
 
Just how accurate do you NEED it to be, anyway? With my heavy barrel rimfire, I'm able to place 10 shots inside 2" at 100 yards, which is all I need. This is with CCI Quik-shok ammo which isn't the MOST accurate stuff I've found for my gun, but it is the most deadly on gophers. Given that I'm using this gun for gophers, out to a max of maybe 120 yards or so, it's plenty accurate enough. And a LOT deadlier than the solids which group inside an inch.

Are you looking for a target gun, or a short-range varminter/plinker?
 
I try to get some from both worlds with the realistic approach of me never participating in competitions. I saw one that would come to my door @ about 400. The other one that competes is the Chinese 322, but no one seems to post reviews for it.

I might go back to the JW15 afterall
 
FWIW.....I own the MarkII FV. My intention was to buy the cheapest tupperware stock version and eventually replace it. But being the tinkerer that I am, I bedded the action and since mine is not the accu-trigger model, I applied the shim trick to drop the trigger weight down to a crisp 3lbs. I also applied a piece of molded plastic in front of the sear to reduce most of the travel.

As for accuracy, I compared it against two other rimfires I own. A remington 541 THB and a BSA Martini. It is the least accurate of the three, but not by much. I have twenty six brands of ammo through it, testing with 5, five shot groups for the average. All groups were off a front and rear bag at 50 meters. The best hunting round so far is the 37 grain winchester Super X at .728" and the best over all is CCI Greentag match ammo at .519" I have a 3-9 x 40 Bushnell trophy with a mil-dot retical on top. Bedding it made a big difference as did shimming the trigger. The overall average for all 26 brands of ammo is 1.264" @ 50meters. My BSA will put almost all match ammo into one hole and the 541 is not picky at all as to what it digests. It shoots cheap federal bulk just as accurate as Federal Gold Medal Match.

I have a new Savage Mk II FV.
best group 1.7 inches at 50yds with Greentag.
Dissapointed to say the least.
Pray tell how did you bed the Stock?
 
Bellracer...Please don't laugh. I actually used my sons play-dough and made a dam just behind the first action screw, ahead of the magazine. I then filled it with hard setting hot gun glue. Super strength stuff. I also filled in that massive hollow hole in the stock where the barrel steps down. The whole area from under the front base up to the step down in the barrel is bedded with hot glue. I let it set for 24 hours and then took a dremel tool and ground out about 1/8 of an inch of the glue. Careful with this, it doesn't grind out, it melts. I then drilled som holes in the glue bed and layed a mix of 5 minute epoxy to it. The epoxy flows down into the holes and creates a much better surface to action fit. It also sets up better. I used pam spray as my release agent and it works great. After about 2 hours I separated the action from the stock and cleaned up any overflow.

From day one I wanted to get rid of this tupperware stock. Sharp Shooter Supplies now has laminate stocks that look amazing. All they need is a finish. This is what I'll likely put on in time.

What ammo seems to shoot the best from yours if GreenTags aren't doing the trick???

A phone call to Savage was like talking to the paranoia squad. They were good enough to say that the Mark II FV should shoot half inch groups at 25 yards, and that the stock screws should be torqued to 25 inch pounds.

As for the ammo, I got the following at 50 yds.
American Eagle -- 3"
Rem Subsonic -- 3"
Fed HV Econopack 2.5"
Fed Lightning -- 1.7"
CCI Greentag -- 1.7"

To be sure, I will be trying other brands and experimenting with the bedding.
