New Savage Mark II - many FTF's.

I just bought a new Savage Mark II F, took it out for the first time on the weekend, had many failure to fires. It looks like the firing pin is not making much of a dent in the rim at all. I compared it to my .17 and other .22 and they have a much more pronounced dent. It isn't the ammo either, the ammo fired fine in the other .22 I had out.

I'm going to call the gun shop where I bought it tomorrow, but just wanted to know if anyone else had this problem. Is Savage pretty good for warranty work or is it up to the dealer?

I don't want to have to send it back to Savage for a long period, gopher season is here. Would they send me a whole new bolt assembly? Kinda doubt it.

When I had an extractor problem on my centerfire savage all I did was send them an email explaining the problem. They sent one back wanting my mailing address. A few weeks later a new extractor assembly showed up in the mail.

You may want to try contacting them.

I called Savage, they wanted me to send the gun to them. Well, with prime gopher season coming, I didn't want to do that, so I called the gunshop that I bought it from and they said they will have a look at it and if they can't fix it, they'll order parts for me.

Obviously these things aren't test fired at the factory.

I just bought a Savage Mark 2. It seems to jam every once in awhile and the bullet head also sometimes hit the top of the bore as I try to close the bolt. Not sure if I'm just getting what I paid for or what?

This is a "new" rifle denting the rim, right?
May I suggest before you go much further- simply remove the bolt and give it a good soaking in brake cleaner or a similar solvent to loosen up the packing grease most manufacturers are using, and then a light application of gun oil (or ATF) which will not bind/thicken in cold weather.
I bought a new Savage centerfire rifle last year and had light strikes before employing the above procedure.

Hope this helps..

Thanks 1shot. Yes, it is brand new. The store I bought it at will likely just do that and hopefully it will do the trick. When I called them and mentioned the problem, they said to just bring it in and they would take care of it.

Another reason why it is a good idea to buy locally, I guess. I could have gotten the same gun online for a few dollars cheaper, but if I had this same problem, I'd be sending the gun back to Savage and have to be without it for a while.

I wonder about that. My new in box BTVSS was spotless, but the barrel was dirty. I can't imagine my dealer test firing it, so it must have been function checked at the factory.
