new savage mkii 100y target shooter help

I have a MKII FV-SR that I regularly shoot out to 400yds with. For optics, I went with a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 because it has 80 moa of elevation adjustment. For a base I used a EGW 20 moa picatinny rail to squeeze that extra adjustment. You'll find subsonic ammo to be your best friend when you're shooting the longer ranges as it doesn't make the transition from super sonic back to sub sonic.

I started a thread a while back on long range 22lr shooting. I recommend giving it a read. Some good info in that thread

Yeah shooting long distance 22 LR is fun! With target ammo you'll need about 26 MOA for 50 to 200 yards, and 48 MOA total for 50 to 300 yards. Despite requiring more come-up, it's preferable to use subsonic 22 LR ammo for long-distance shooting. Supersonic ammo suffers from two disadvantages: (a) the transition to subsonic flight (which will occur inside of 100 yards for a 1300 fps, 40 grain bullet) is turbulent, which can throw the bullet off, and (b) a 22 LR bullet suffers a great deal more wind deflection when it's travelling supersonic, as opposed to subsonic.

I've shot my BVT out to 200. I got the best accuracy/consistency from using CCI SV and Eley Practice. But it took a LOT more clicks of elevation compared to the higher velocity HV ammo.

Noting ahead of time that I'm not the world's best bench rest shooter and I just use whatever blocks are at the range I found I was able to keep the SV and EP ammo to roughly a 3 inch group 7 or 8 out of ten. Some of the issue may have been wind related. With no way to tell really which direction or how strong it is I just aimed and shot with no allowance for wind. Typically when I shot this rifle at that distance it's been light but rolling around winds in the range due to trees and tall side berms.

My Mk II BVT uses a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 2-7x40. That doesn't seem like much compared to other options being given but I found it allows me to easily see a 4 inch handgun steel Caldwell flip up target at 200. And it's hot hidden behind the cross hairs or anything like that. And the Nikon glass remains wonderfully clear even at full zoom. Something that no other equal or cheaper scope I've looked through can manage. I strongly believe that the Nikon scopes are a real sleeper for cost vs performance.

I have an identical setup but mine is a bv. The p rimfire scope is great because it replaces a Nikon Rimfire 2 4-12 scope that was zeroed at 50m but the bdc at 100 was too sloppy. The only problem i find with the 2-7 is that at 100m it is a little undermagnified. I love the adjustable turrets, however. Maybe i will try the subsonic ammo. I probably should have purchased another p223 4-12.
