New scope equal or better than 4200 Bushnell

I’m looking for scope options for deer hunting, my standard in the past has been a 2.5-10x40 Bushnell 4200. In the past I found it great in low light, now just all right, so I definitely can’t afford to end up with less quality. What choices would you consider as good or better glass? What scopes should I be considering in used and new options? I should add that I’m interested in 1” tube, 40mm objectives and it’s going on a lever action in 308 win. I’m thinking I don’t want less than 40 mm obj for light gathering...

4200's are Bushnell's great secrets as much as I now have no taste buds for the Bushnell products.

I would think the VX111 would be comparable.

There is a Zeiss Terra 3X 4-12-42 sitting idle here.
PM me if you are interested.

Yeah... I like the 4200 Elite as well. Shame they stopped making it. Shame that Nikon bailed on the older Monarch and then on riflescopes completely. I've moved over to the Leupold VX-3 (Unfortunately Zeiss bailed on the comparable Conquest in that bracket and the new HD5 is about $1000) for that range of hunting optic. Kept the other "obsolete" models for their virtues but any new I kinda got cornered into Leupold as I still prefer gloss black (another contentious point). For the most part I'm stuck surfing the used market for 1" gloss tubes with 36-40mm obj. in about 2-8x.

Nearest matches off hand:
Vortex Razor HD Light Hunter 2-10x40 ~1100.00
Zeiss Conquest HD 2-10x42 ~1000.00
Aforementioned Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36mm are over 600.00 and 3.5-10x40...

They’ve really made it hard for me to find a new scope I like. In new stuff at the big box store I liked the Leupold VX3 and Swarovski Z3. There were others, but these stood out as delivering more for the price jump. Thanks for the suggestions

Sounds like my Zeiss Diavari-C 3-9x36mm would fit your bill for a .308 levergun. Although less than 40mm objective, the clarity of German-made version from the lens coatings is great. PM if interested as I just have it sitting around.

When I was searching for glass for my 223 i compared many makes and models. Although i was looking at higher magnifacation and larger objectives the nightforce shv 4-14×56 stood out as best for my vision. Im actually thinking about getting the 3-10×42 for my next rifle.
I have several bushnell scopes and never had an issue and i like their price point better but when comparing them side by side with the shv is clearer and sharper. Colors are more vibrant and go full edge to edge
Second was swarovski z3 as i couldnt find a z5 to look thru. Super clear just not the features i wanted for my 223. Will likely put one on my squirrel rifle eventually

I really liked the Z3 I looked at in the store.

Ill be putting a 3-9x36 z3 on my 17mach2 and likely my next 22mag. Thinking another nightforce for my current build.
A call to jerry at mystic precision may get you to take a look at a sightron or athlon
