New Sear

a new sear should be square and what they call neutral engagement which is fine and gives a lighter trigger feel. older sears as they are used alot can wear away causing a slope and negative engagement also some bubbas have filed the sear to make it more hair trigger this is a bad idea for it makes the rifle dangerous to carry loaded. a new sear should be good to go as it wears file in a more positive engagement for safety sake.

Sounds exactly what I want. Now I have to wait for SKSman. Took a few weeks to get a Tapco kit from him. Hopefully that was just the Christmas rush. How can someone run an online business yet never reply to emails? Either in high demand or is likely losing sales. Fingers crossed, also putting on a spring loaded firing pin and recoil buffer. Anyone used the recoil buffer? Any performance changes?

Paul wont lose a single customer that does order by phone, he treats his customers good. The recoil buffer takes some of the slap out of the action's recoil but thats about it. More of a farkle than anything.

Can anyone tell me if a brand new sear is set to the ideal engagement or is it something that has to be tested?

If you buy a brand new sear for a SKS it will not function until it is fitted to the trigger group. I have always start with a new sear when doing any trigger work. If you check out the following link and follow the video instructions you will have a trigger that is safer and smooth as silk.

he would know better than i but it seems to me the problem of the negative engagement sear is from it being worn out, no? i did enjoy watching the trigger job tutorial my sear has neutral engagement so i figured i didn't need to do it but maybe i should anyways. i guess the geometry of the sear / hammer catch is different from one rifle to the next so it needs to be fine tuned.

cheers!:D

You will find that most SKS's have negative sear engagement, all the ones I have worked on did. Does not mean the sear is worn out but cut that way. Negative and neutral sear engagement is a form of a safety. When they are negative or neutral it usually means high trigger pull with lots of creep, if that makes sense.

the way i understand it is the negative engagement a down ward slope can cause the sear to work its way out from under the hammer with bumping and vibration but with a very light pull. neutral was flat to flat so not too likely to be moving around and with a smoother lighter pull than positive engagement but not as light as negative. and positive meant it had an opposite slope to negative causing the sear if anything to be pulled further under the hammer but increasing the force it would take to pull the trigger. and polish the surfaces that contact each other to make it even smoother. my sks is a 1950 tula refurb it has the ruskie spring loaded firing pin. i tested the trigger group and have no movement on the hammer until it falls so "neutral engagement" it does feel a bit gritty sometimes so maybe a polish is in order. file the face down a bit to reduce creep. i have only the one sks so i cant speak as to most sks engagement.

I don't doubt he would then maybe the whole website should be for pricing and info and then only accept phone orders. I have spoken to him and he was helpful but forgetful. No offence to him.
