In one of the biggest innovations we've seen here at the SHOT Show, Savage has solved the problem of cycling .17 HMR ammo through an autoloader. Savage made several changes to their standard autoloader design to make the A17 more reliable, but the biggest addition on the rifle is a special lug that locks the bolt in place for a millisecond, delaying blowback to allow most of the gases from burning powder to dissipate. The slight delay allows the bolt to cycle reliably. The steel receiver and chromed components create a surface to further enhance cycling. The A17 comes with a 10-round rotary magazine and adjustable Accutrigger. It features a button-rifled barrel, and the one I tested shot smoothly and accurately.
Savage has also worked with CCI to develop A17 ammunition that shoots 100 fps faster than standard 17 HMR cartridges. At 2,650 fps it will help ensure cycling in the rifle under cold conditions and when the gun has seen heavy use and is fouled.

Well hopefully Savage get this one right. The last big announcement from them regarding rimfire was the .17WSM BMAG! I would love to get a rifle in that caliber but I won't get a BMAG.

A17...never heard of it! Hmm... Wonder how Savage will screw this one up. :( I'm a big fan of Savage centerfires from an accuracy POV, but from first hand experience...I'm discouraged about QC on their rimfires these days. If they got this right, if it's a sub-MOA shooter, if it's under $500 built as described...I could see it being a real temptation.

Apparently ruger is coming out with a bolt action 17 WSM shortly so you can get that instead.

me to always like the auto and In a magnum thy would be that cats meow .hope thy can get the 22 mag auto figgerd out as well for under 500$.that's what kept me from going to one of the customs in 22 mag .thy are just priced way to high for me Dutch

Been poking around a bit online, but can't find the answer... Does the gun feature a heavy barrel? Found a couple of photos of the rifle, doesn't appear to.. Anybody @ SHOT want to ask Savage for me? :)

A heavy barrel, great accuracy reports, and a sub $500 could push me over the edge on this one. :) A guy I know is @ SHOT right now, just messaged him to see if he's been to the Savage booth. I asked him to see if there is an MSRP, when it might land in Canada, heavy barrel, where is it made, etc. If I end-up with any info., I'll share here for sure.

Yeah...that's interesting. Makes me wonder whether or not CCI is too busy messing around with stuff like this to get us .22lr reliably. If the A17 only runs on this new ammo reliably, then I'm not interested. If it's simply a faster HMR, that could be cool on it's own merit. The bolt sounds interesting on this gun, they had to be thinking about the 597 issues and OOB discharges.

The only thing slowing CCI down is equipment. They would have had to order an entire new assembly to be able to produce more 22lr and by the time that was set up, the demand will settle down. As it is, they are running 24/7 and producing all that they can.

This A17 looks really interesting. Looks like it will be low to medium price range by appearance. My worry on it is the stock. The stock on the B.Mag was so flimsy it might as well have been tissue paper.

Yes I heard they have. Thanks for the heads up I appreciate it. It's a shame CZ don't bring one out as they produce excellent rifles. I hope Savage can get this right but the introduction of the BMAG was a disaster.

Back to the A17.. :) Just heard from the fellow I know down there, he spoke with the guy who developed the rifle and was able to ask a few questions. From what he was told, the rifle is made in the US, MSRP (Canadian or US~he didn't specify) is $465, no heavy barrel right now, but possible for next year.

Savage rimfires, minus the BMAG, are made in Canada. All Canadian made Savages seem to shoot very well. The American made BMAG is hit and miss in the accuracy department. I really hope the A17 performs more like its Canadian made counterparts.

I see Savage now offers the BMAG in a laminate, thumbhole stock with a heavy Stainless Steel barrel....might be worth looking at!
