The FRC will be hosting a New shooter day June 12, 2010, starting at 9:00 am. APRA Homestead 900 Meter Range, Kananaskis. There is no cost to attend, and is a great opportunity to try long range shooting.

Just matches scheduled for July & August.
You are welcome to attend a match -
July 10 & 11 ,FRC Percision Match
Auguast 7 & 8 , FRC Friendship Match ( TR & F Class)

Is everyone going to be back shooting at 900M? It would be nice to stretch the legs on my coyote around some people that know what there doing at that range since i certainly dont.

I am heading out to Homestead for the Rosebud shoot that day. Is there a scheduled structure to the day or would I be able to pop in when there is a break on the the range?

This has the makings of a great day!

They usually shoot 2 or 3 different distances. Starting up close at 3-400 meters and working back to the 900 meter line.

Its a great oppertunity to see what you and your rifle can do. The instant feedback will really help you see how much the wind can change between shots and affect POI. The 1/2 MOA V-Bulls can be quite ellusive.

Yeah it would be nice to shoot with people with all the gear. i dont have a spotting scope so it makes spotting misses very hard. I'll try to make it out but we'll see how thing play out.

The new shooter day typically works along the line of walking new shooters through fullbore shooting, including an equipment overview, range safety and scoring. Then we conduct a shoot (2x convertible sighters, 10 rounds on score) at 400 & 800m and provide some coaching (which you won't generally have during a regular match) on wind, mirage, shooting position and potentially ammo & equipment. You also get an opportunity in the butts, to learn how to score/indicate.

We're pretty open to questions and try for 900m as well, time and weather permitting. It is difficult to accommodate walk-ons through-out the day, as that means that we have to stop and explain the basics to the detriment of those who have already had the explanation, plus the step to 800m is best taken from 400m (not 800m cold). That said, we do what we can to accommodate the majority.

The long range shooting is a challenge - the F-Class (optics & bipods) and the Target Rifle (iron sights & slings) provide different alternatives for those that want to experiment. F-Class itself is an interesting experience in calibers and cartridges for those that want to get into the more technical aspects (more so in F-Open than F-TR, which is restricted to .308W or .223R). Individual range rules also restrict the maximum caliber, which is generally 8mm at most ranges.

Hope to see you there.

Tango-Kilo, if you don't make the one in August, they have an excellent match (8-900) in September (the 11th I believe) and a whole bunch of us BC types will be making the pilgrimage. We often arrive early enough on the Friday to get some 8 and 900M zeroes, so if you want to hook up on the Friday, we can swap lies and excuses! If you need a gun to use, I will have an extra - as always.

As to anyone else thinking about this, you GOTTA meet these guys and get to know them. I love coming to Homestead. There are some great shooters and some great times at these shoots, and it is all about fun - not competition (ok... may be a little between me, the Frippulator, CyaN1de and Shockman... we shoot to the death)

It is a fantastic range that is the great equalizer! The Fullbore Rifle Club (FRC) of the APRA also has a factory class now, for new shooters to use what they already own too. I was thrilled to see this!

Off to the EE to look for BP clothing :D

Just noticed this thread.... very tempting!

What's the usual round count for such an event?

s>

(2x convertible sighter's, 10 rounds on score) at 400 & 800m plus 2x sighter's and 10 rounds at 900m if there is time. 36 rounds in my gesstamit.
Crappy weather..can't decide if I want to come and play.

It was an excellent experience, and a great day to be out in the foothills. Thank-you very much for the time and effort to all the shooters that came out to help us newbs. See you soon
