New shooter from 22lr to ???

9mm is probably the preferred way to go if price is an issue. .45 is significantly more expensive which makes it slightly more difficult to shoot just for fun. If you really want a 1911 style pistol there are quite a few of them chambered in 9mm.

What type of shooting do you expect to do with a centrefire?
That should influence your choice of caliber. If you want to shoot bullseye in some form, accurate 9 mm are scarce and expensive...that argues for a .38 sp. If you expect to shoot action shooting then that narrows your choices..IPSC and IDPA both have rules w.r.t. the pistol...get one that lets you compete in whichever you fancy. PPC also has its own requirements...if it is just plinking you wish to do then buy whatever catches your eye....
good luck

Wow I need to google half of this post lol
I'll just be plinking at the range, you never know if I'll end up getting into competition shooting but by that time I can always looks for the right gun for that job.
9mm isn't accurate? Hmm I'm assuming handloads can be accurate?

I'm thinking I can't really go wrong, lots to think of. If I knew I could get another say within a year itd be less pressure, but I'm sure the wife would love that more than my growing number of knives...

A 1911 in 9mm has a few advantages.

1. Low recoil, especially if the frame is steel.
2. Longevity, the platform was designed for the greater recoil of the .45. In 9mm it should last a VERY long time.

Considering the smaller caliber I would recommend a 1911 in Commander Size...4.25" barrel. Or even better CCO (commander slide/barrel with officer's frame).
