Hey Guys,

I just got my gun license in the mail yesterday and ordered my first Handgun the same day. I live in Calgary and would like to get involved with IDPA what do I need to know? What additional gear is needed? and who do i talk to to get started?

Thanks Jesse.

I started a couple of months ago with the guys already mentioned and they are great with new shooters. Lots of coaching and an excellent environment over all with the shooters who show up for the IDPA stuff.

Joe even lent me a pistol for my first ever match (hows that for helping a guy out).

I bought a G17, holster, mag pouch and started shooting in the stock service pistol catagory. Lots of fun.

See ya there.

The next ATHL match is coming up on Sunday the 27th of July. Should be a decent match with some carbines mixed in for sh!ts and giggles.:D
DPL at 'the Edge' is indeed held on Wednesday nights, but with summer in full swing, not many of us have been coming out to it -once it is back to normal, definately come out. As a matter of fact I can confirm I will be there next Wednesday if you want to drop in.

What do you need to know? I would make several recommendations:
- Get to know your pistol - meaning safe, comfortable & confident handling. For this I'd recommend competent instruction, and dryfire drills with dummy rounds. -The lack of which should not shy you away from coming out to a match.
- Get some decent gear - Bladetech is a good choice for holsters and mag carriers, and TSE and 911 supply both have decent selections.
- Extra mags. 3 mags is pretty much a minimum, but more the merrier.
- Dive right in. This is easy, safe, fun -you'll have a blast (pun intended)

X2

I've been to two shoots this year and the crew is more than helpful to us noobs. I was pretty nervous the first time I went out, but that went away pretty quick the day of.

I have such a good time, that I've got a buddy to come out (also never shot competition before) and he's set to join up as well. We come down from Edmonton for the matches.

Not to hijack, any match info coming out for the 27th? I'm trying to race out of Borden to be there on time.

Great day on the Range

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to report that with allot of help from Mass and Mike I went out the Old's range in Alberta and had a great time with my first IDPA experience.
Mass was kind enough to lend me his Sig and gear to shoot for the day while I wait for my pistol to arrive.
I learned allot and as noted had big silly grin on my face by the end of the day. I would encourage anyone that is thinking of taking this up or for any target shooters looking to try something different to give it a try.
Both Mass and Mike were a great help and very supportive of me and had lots of great pointers and tips.
Again thanks guys and you can count one more into the fold, I am hooked.

+1 for ATHL, most fun ive ever had with a pistol, been to 3 matches so far and i dont have any plans to miss any of the rest

you find out really quick where you need improvement on your shooting and have lots of fun doing it. the guys around here also set up cool matches, only been to 3 matches and ive shot out of cars, had to use a .38 special revolver, taken out a steel popper with a shotgun, and emptied a snubby as fast as i can into 2 target.

matches are never boring and always creative

Jesse, thanks for the kind words. It's always a pleasure to introduce a new shooter to the great sport of IDPA. :welcome:

Brennan, just wait for the next match!!!! Mike has some pretty cool stages planned for ATHL Match #9 scheduled for July 27th. The Match Copy and registration forms should be going out electronically in the next few days. :dancingbanana:

They are indeed awesome.

Let me tell you, Mass and Steve and the rest of the guys are just fantastic. I went out to therange on Sat, to meet the guys and help set up. Then on sunday, I entered the shoot. 1st stage, 1st reload, my Taurus malfunctions. At least 3 guys came to my aid, but unfortunetely for me, My Taurus is down and out. Mass comes up and offers to lend me his Glock 17. I had a fantastic shoot. Then, he offers to come to Airdrie on Wed and helps a few of us Classify. Hows that for a GREAT guy. I have found a home in Alberts, and it's called ATHL.
