I am new to the whole shooting sport.....background military, have hunted for a few years, want to try 3 gun tactical shooting.....know absolutely nothing about it, how to get started, where to go, who to talk to, equipment needed, live by Lake Erie in Southern Ontario.......need help and information....
Welcome to 3 gun.
The action shooting competition forum here has a ton of info. You could spend many many hours reading through peoples inquiries into 3 gun.
Like others have suggested here, the easiest way to learn is to go to your nearest club that shoots 3 gun and check it out.
Most 3 gunners are very friendly and willing to chat up their gear, and knowledge on the subject. Plus, after a match, many will let you check out their gear.
The other thing that I would recommend is reading the rule book for 3 gun at the club at which you are going to compete/shoot at.
The rule book will cover, the rules of the game, safety requirements, gear and gun requirements and general information about the sport at that club.
also, check out the following thread, it has a ton of great info from a variety of experienced 3 gunners and will possibly answer some your questions.

Lastly, as we all here love to talk guns and gear and 3 gun, if you have specific questions....ask. You are bound to get lots of replies from guys/gals who've played the game for years.
