Had a new shooter into blackpowder last weekend...he loved it. Yesterday I called him by mistake and he said if me and a buddy wanted to come out and do some more as he was stuck painting and his G/F was gone and he needed a break from it.Sure I said and I also brought out a couple of heavy rifles for him to try out...namely a 416 rigby and 460wby....both on the #1 actions...welllllll.......heheheh

Now this fella is in his early 20"s and a very good hearted laughing fella.Great guy to have as a friend...plus he is also a plumber. So we do some bp shooting then out comes the rigby. Biggest he has ever shot is a 7 mag.I get him leaning forward, rifle real tight and he lets go with it.The look on his face was priceless...just like a kid at x-mas time.A few more rounds of that and then out comes the 460.I took off the muzzle break just for the s**ts and giggles factor, and dont worry I dug in my shooting bag b4 hand and he was wearing muffs the whole time.1st round of a 405 grainer at 2700FPS and he was just shaking his head...not to mention working his shoulder. He really liked that.

Few more rounds and his shoulder was hurting and he had some bruising coming on.By this time he had shot about $150.00 bucks worth of ammo..:stirthepot2: But thats ok...Few more rounds of bp shooting and then he wanted me to shoot both of them.I said sure, and I will even do them off the temp bench we had set up.No problemo...:D heheh...now here is the jackass part. I dug a little deeper and pulled out a past super duper recoil shield. Its the super magnum model and does wonders for protecting your shoulder. He asked what it was so I strapped it to him. Then he asked how it worked...I said like this..

I up and just drove him in the shoulder, right on the pad. I knocked him back a few feet but he looked at me and said that he never even felt it.I told him thats what they are designed for....so a few more rounds of 416 and he is real happy. Then he asks why I didnt give him that in the first place. I just laughed and replied," when I first started shooting heavy rifles...I never had one either, shot like that for over 20 years, till a buddy of mine brought one out and I learned how they cut down recoil...just like you is learnin now"

So he wants to try the 460 out again...no problem, but now I put the brake back on it.I advise him to clamp on the muffs real tight and he does.My other buddy is standing 4 feet to the side and 2 feet behind the firing line.I told him to plug his ears tight...him being a macho old country boy he says, naw...aint gonna hurt me to hear it go off.I said its your ears and you is on your own.GUESS WHAT????

New shooter is laughing now as he isnt hurting...an the old grizzled cowboy..is walking around with his ears ringing...bigtime and fingers in both ears trying to get the bells outta his head..:p I warned him.. Few more rounds and the new shooter is having a blast and the old fella...plugged his ears every time after that..

I knew that the new shooter could handle the recoil of a heavy rifle...he just loves them and wants to get a few of his own.In fact after that he really wants to get into shooting. When we were leaving he asked me to bring out anything I want, as he wants to shoot lots.No problem me thinks...I have lots to choose from...oh and the plumber part...I told him you just fired between $300...to..$400 bucks worth of ammo...so my next service call better be free...:owned:

Sounds like a great time was had by all...well, except Mr. I-don't-need-ear-plugs ;) Wonder what the recoil feels like from the .585 Nyati...brutal might be an understatement :)

Awesome. I know my 460 would dent the shoulder pad to the point it took the ride home to puff out again. I figured better it than me. Haha. I dont use it much now as i dont shoot the biggest guns of the bench anymore.

When i got my 460 i let about five guys at work shoot it. A few shot it more than once. All were smiling. I have had one guy shoot my 510 Wells and he was smiling too. I dont want anyone to get hurt or drop a gun so all of them get a few pointers. If i had 10 rounds of ammo and a guy really wanted to shoot it, i would let him. Maybe not two days in a row. Lol

Wish I had a buddy that would let me blast off a few hundred bucks worth of ammo

C"Mon out to alberteee....u is more then welcome to take a few of my rifles out for a test run...

I talked to the new shooter yesterday...his first words...fuk my arm is sore!! But he wants to shoot again...as for the old grizzled old fogie...his ears are still ringing...hehehehehe:slap::stirthepot2:
