Hey folks,

I've got a Diemaco SA20 and I was wondering, as it's a 1:7" twist, which ammo would be ideal to purchase? I'm especially concerned about what sort of bullet weight I'd be looking for. Purely target shooting so I figure .223 would be the cheapest bet?

Ideal is subjective and will require trial and error testing. Functional and adequate is way easier. My personal favourite is whatever is on sale and most of that will be around a 55 grain bullet. Federal of any flavour, PMC, Remington, Norinco and many others, they all work fine for general plinking and target shooting. My advice is to pick up a variety and try them on the same day at the same distances to see which works best for you and your gun. That will keep you busy for a while then when you decide to join the dark side and start reloading there will more deeper (funner) rabbit holes to explore. Enjoy the ride!
 
Hoping to do precision shooting with it or just for blasting at the range?

Precision .223 I favour 69gr SMK which is loaded by a couple companies. If you're looking to shoot precision ammo on a regular basis it's worth looking into loading your own for both cost and tuning a load specific to your rifle.

Blasting ammo (5-100m mostly standing, barricade drills, multi-gun competition, etc.) I use whatever is cheapest which is always 55gr FMJ.

Not sure yet, lol. I guess blasting until I'm good enough for precision? Thanks for the info though! Really helps :)
 
1:7 might be too fast for 55 grain... But shoot some and find out! Just don't judge your particular rig's accuracy by how it shoots the bargain basement 55 grain cheap-o ammo (Cheap federal/Winchester, Norinco, surplus, etc.)
 
Your barrel is good enough to tell good bullets from poor bullets. Worst groups I ever shot were with Winchester white box 55 gr. About 3" at 100 yards. I found PMC to be good cheap 55 gr ammo.

If you have a good scope and shoot off sand bags, your best groups will be with 68, 69, 75 or 77gr bullets. They will also perform better at longer ranges than 55 gr because they drift less in the wind.
