New shooter - SKS: Chinese or Russian?

I have both.
the Russian shot good till i pounded the stock out and it got loose.
7000+ rounds...
That should be fixed with a Tapco stock...shoulda got a take off...

Been shooting the Chinese one since the Russian would miss lots.

It has been just as good..but the finish on the wood is a bit like roughcut lumber lol

Rusty,
I have bought several Russian SKS from Al @ West Rifle. You can see photos of the actual one you are buying and their service is trustworthy. I just received a 1955 Tula from him. When I disassembled it I was mildly surprised to find it had never even been fired. Sergei (or Olga) over at the factory had simply riveted the magazine and then stamped the refurb diamond on the receiver cover. Where can you buy a new rifle for $200 - $240 including shipping ?

p.s. I had bought several of the Canadian Tire/LeBaron refurbs also and although they were good shooters, they did not even come close to the stuff Al is selling. You won't be disappointed...

Ive also had better luck with accuracy out of Chinese sks,,but prefer the history behind the Russian ones.

Yay,,I cracked 1000 posts,,Wheres my free goat?

Here ya' be.......

If I were you, I would buy a nice Russian laminate shooter, 1952 or up, and a crate of surplus ammo (pick your national flavour), then immediately start saving for a quality bolt action rifle. Don't waste your money on cheap and mid-range priced junk as you'll likely sell them on EE for a steep loss.

Comparing a Chinese SKS to a Russian SKS is akin to comparing an Ash baseball bat to an Oak baseball bat. They're both crude implements of war, both shoot and function the same. Once your tastes mature, you'll recognize how nice a non-refurbished, mint Russian SKS is--but not necessary as a shooter.

I've seen some pretty ugly, soft Chu-wood stocks, and I've seen some very nicely grained and harder Chu-wood stocks. The Russian Arctic birch and laminates are much harder and generally nicer. The only real difference.

My suggestion is got to any firearm store and touch it. If you have friends who have Russian or Chinese go shoot it.

You might end up buying both :)

Al

Don't do it, its a trick. You'll go in and see all the possibilities you can do with an SKS and you'll end up hooked and wanting multiple varieties. I have two Russian ones i got from Westrifle online and couldn't be happier with the quality of them but now I am looking at getting at least one more.

lol I put a Tapco stock on my Russian and it shoots good again...but it feels cheep...and kinda like my Mossberg 715t now:rolleyes:

I think I can fix the stock I took off it with some bodyfiller:p

Also keep thinking I need a 3rd SKS to try installing a mag adaptor in...

My best advice..don't buy an SKS ...dang things are kinda like potato chips and dip...:p
