Doesn't it piss you off when you see someone who never shot a firearm before try to look through a scope? They'll put there eye right up to the scope and complain that the can't see anything lol.

Why would it piss you off?

I'm sure there's plenty that you don't know.

If you enjoy shooting, take the time to teach them the proper way.

It's not an unreasonable mistake. Their previous experience was probably with binoculars which you do have to hold closer to your eyes.

Everyone was a rookie once. It is better to help them than humiliate them.

Do you get pissed off at yourself when you try something for the first time? Unless you are some kind of prodigy,I am sure you must have done things wrong the first time.

If it is the first time with a firearm, let alone a scope there are more important things to teach and be concerned about.
Be patient and offer advice encourage them to get into the sport as opposed to ridiculing and being "pissed off"

Agreed. I know people who will never pick up a firearm again because they were made fun of and not because they are anti gun.

Binoculars.

Telescopes.

Microscopes.

Periscopes.

Camera view finders.

Kalidascopes.

Yeah, I can't figure out why those stupid newbies would put their eye right up to the scope either.:p

I just jumped back on to add a side note but as you can see, this proves my original point. Why would you make fun of a new shooter instead of teaching them? We, as a shooting community should be better than this but instead we are our own worse enemy. Why would new shooters or potential new shooters feel comfortable about people making fun of them? We are slamming the door in their faces before they even get a chance to explore what firearms in Canada is about. My wife and daughter shoots but do not know as much about form and technique as I do, so are you going to make fun of them? My Son has more competition experience than I do, so are you going to make fun of me? Talk about not feeling welcomed.

I was just about to ask if anyone noticed that it is the older shooters who try to offer advice and help new shooters vs a younger generation who have a few years of shooting experience and feel they know it all?

No one said the OP was "making fun" of new shooters, he is simply stating his frustration here on the forum. Without mentioning names it is nothing but idle banter. To the OP's credit it is frustrating to see such stupidity. Lenses and simple physics/science would tell you that there is a focal length to the optic. With the list of other commonly used/experienced optics like binoculars and microscopes, it should be common knowledge that there is a sweet spot for your eye to be in relation to the ocular lens. If you mount the rifle and see the reticle while continuing to move your head closer then lose sight of the reticle(the black blob) it would only be a reasonable action to move your head back to where you could see it. Pressing your eye against the lens then proclaiming you can't "see sh*t" or "I think the scope is broken" is an ignorant and defeatest response.

As the mentor for a new shooter some instruction is definitely required and discussing the basics to scopes is one of them. That being said, as a new shooter there is also some appropriate etiquette, and pretending to know what you're doing is not part of it. If you don't know(which as a new shooter you likely don't) ask questions and don't assume... It is frustrating to take a new shooter out only for them to act and proclaim they know what they're doing.

I shot for quite a while both scoped and irons. When i got my mosin sniper i found it was a different view i got from a modren scope and kind of had to get closer. Now i have a scar under my eye and i never get too close now and if i see someone else close i just let them know what they are doing is a black eye waiting to happen. Its not the scope issues that bothers me with new shooters its the muzzle control.

To the OP's credit, he didn't do it but you and a few others in this post started using the word stupid or stupitity. Do you like being called 'stupid'!?! I know I don't, especially about something I am new to and seeking guidance for!

You must be a real barrel of laughs. Of course you knew everything and was an instant expert right ?
