Just picked up a Maverick 88 today, anything I should do before I go shoot it? This is my first shotgun, I've got a couple .22's so this is all new to me.

I've read that there's quite the cleaning ritual for precision rifles before they're shot new, but as this is not precision in any way, will it matter for functionality down the road?

I swabbed the barrel and cleared out a bunch of black gunk from the factory, and lubed it up appropriately. Should I do anything else, such as disassemble and thoroughly clean? Or is all this pointless and in vain on such a machine?

My girlfriend has a mavy too and we just checked for barrel obstructions and cycled some snap caps then went and shot then when we came back we pulled it apart and cleaned it,its a fun gun youll like it.hers dosnt like low brass evey now and then we get a jam

Ive got OCD when it comes to cleaning. It makes such a difference. The closer you can get to the firearm, figure out its inner workings, take care of gunk and crap and debris, the better off your gonna be. Modern firearms you can get away with a lot....but youtube your gun, and someone has a video on how to do a thurough scrubbin.

I've got one ... check the barrel for random bits from the factory, load it, abuse the hell out of it, revel in the joy of what a "cheap" shotgun will do for you ... repeat as desired for the next 20 years. Mine is going on 21 or 22 years old now, and it's been properly cleaned twice - once a week afer I got it, once a few years later after it went swimming in some nasty swamp mud. Otherwise, a swab down the barrel now and then, and some oil dripped into the mechanics of it. I think it may be due for another cleaning as it's gettign a little stiff to cycle when it's really cold out, which tells me it's time to "change the oil" in it :D

Haha, all great to know, specially the tips on ammo. It's been out a few times now and doing great, small magazine issue at the moment, but I'll hopefully get that worked out momentarily. As for shooting though, it's flawless :)
