New Shotguns to be built under S&W brand

Not much aware of the existing gun Writers.......how reputable is the gentleman who penned the article? That round body 20ga looks nice though.....

Gresham's been around for years but he's hardly anyone I respect for his opinions on shotguns. He made a series of what I thought were pretty stupid posts about these guns on The High Road. He sure sounds like he is in S&W's pocket.

As for the guns themselves they are made in Turkey and while not all Turkish made guns are necessarily bad I wouldn't buy one just on the say so of some gunwriter.

Just another "hack" shilling hardware for the trade.

Gresham became a "writer" because his daddy was a well respected outdoorsman/writer.

Don't think the Turks are going to displace the Italians, Germans, Brits, Spaniards or Japanese any-time soon as gunmakers. So far, maybe neck & neck with the South Americans & Russians, but still ahead of the Chinese.

Hmmm had to stick my .o2 worth ,first of all don't slam em till you see the product ,I have 2 "russian" shotguns that I will put beside any other as far as machine work and fit and finish,I was told the factory in the Ural mountains predates the revolution,:runaway: second I had a berretta semi auto and it was the biggest pile of junk that was built, and after three sets of parts even the factory gave up. FROM EXPERIENCE LOOK BEFORE YOU CONDEM.....:runaway: :runaway:

Maybe you should relax a bit. I'm sure your Russian guns are very nice. They did make some decent guns and a lot of crap too. Maybe you could post pics of your guns. What make are they?

I'm not condemning S&W's guns but the track record of guns from Turkey is spotty at best. The Huglu's, DeHaan's can either gems of junkers depending on the day. The CZ guns (made by Huglu) seem nice for the price but whether they will stand up in the long term remains to be seen.

What I am condemning though are the remarks made by Tom Gresham. He's an idiot.

Concur with CB......the cosmetics on those CZ shotguns are very nice but there is still a BIG question mark in terms of quality control......it can be a hit or miss thing, the miss being more frequent :). If CZ/Huglu is able to streamline that important factor, those firearms, considering the existing fit/finish + price range will really sell, IMHO. I do own a couple of CZ Bobwhites, no problems so far but too early to provide a verdict. However, they do fit and shoot like some of the best English and Spanish guns I've used in a previous life :) Ironic though that Turkish gunmakers are also able to produce shotguns offered by Kimber......guess it's a similar scenario that we see in case of the various gunmakers in Spain.

CB my remarks were not adressed to you at all ,and yes sometimes its easy too shoot from the lip but far too often i have seen all types of firearms put down because they were not made in the correct country. I shot competively for many years and was always mystified why some always had to have a Perazzi, Ljuitic, or Kriegoff to try and break a better score.Domestics worked just as well a good 1100 or model 12 comes to mind.So I guess it comes down to is price and personal preferance, and yes I now shoot 682 Beretta ,lol   and as far as the gentlemen you referred to I have no knowledge of him ,and trust that he is not all that well respected ...

reddog, I've owned all of the models you mentioned with the exception of a Ljutic and without getting into an expensive versus inexpensive gun debate there are a couple of reasons I'm suspect of the S&W shotguns.

The first is that the Turks may be able to make some good guns but from what I've seen so far the quality isn't consistent. The CZ guns are starting to sway my views somewhat but it's too early to tell.

The second reason is a little more insidious. The gun world is rife with examples of major manufacturers going off shore to have guns made under their brand name. Winchester comes to mind as a prime example.

These guns are built offshore because they can be built less expensively. The foreign gunmakers build these guns to a specific price point that will allow them and the importer to make a profit. If it means cutting a few corners to make that price point then so be it. In a previous era it was Spain that filled this role. Now the U.S. companies are looking to Turkey and Russia.

I'll take a look at the guns when they arrive but they start out with two strikes against them and I'm loathe to pay more for a gun just because it has the S&W logo stamped on the barrels.

Well said and point taken ,you must remember then when Browning first started manufacturing in Japan and how the gun world was taken aback, if the quality is not there then I hope the buying public will speak with there pocketbooks :( :(
