I recently picked up an Armco tuned np29 (1911 in 9mm) in hopes of doing some ipsc in the near future. I've been practicing my double taps with several of my pistols and noticed I'm slightly slower with the 1911 because of the sights. In comparison to the fibre optics on my cz shadow, I seem to be much slower at the follow ups. Upon inspection, I noticed the sight was put on using the older technique with the rivet on the bottom and not a dovetail. If possible, I would love to install a fibre optic of some sort however, I don't have the the tools or the skills to do this myself. Are there any gunsmiths I should look into contacting? I'd also prefer someone located locally in Calgary too! Thanks in advance, Chris

Now to figure out which sights to go with for IPSC... any suggestions? My research tells me alot of people prefer skinny front and wide rear sight for speed.

Slower on the follow ups means more felt recoil or flip, better sights will help but are not required if you hold tighter with your free hand.

Thanks for the tip! If thats the case, i might as well practice stance and form with this norinco beater and invest that money into something a little fancier in the future. Im looking to order some parts from brownells as my slide stop broke last range session. Are there some quick drop in parts i should look into getting? I was considering a full length guide rod but i was told it doesnt do much for my purposes

Where did your slide stop break?

I'd pass on a FLGR, but that is the subject of MUCH internet debate.

I think the most useful upgrades would be to replace all springs with mil-spec weight Wolff springs, and probably new grips. Get some good G10 grips (VZ are excellent, I prefer the ones with the mag release cutout) and you can move them to whatever uber-1911 you might get in the future (keep the old ones for reselling the Norinco if you go that route). Maybe a flat mainspring housing, but that's mainly a "feel" thing (and many of these require fitting). Aside from that, it's fairly hit-or-miss as to what parts are drop-in vs requiring fitting. Besides, everything works pretty well on that pistol as it is out of the box.

Your NP didnt come with FLGR? Mine did. Brand new from Frontier. The only thing I changed on mine was the barrel bushing with recoil spring cap. Also installed 9 lb recoil spring. Ordered those parts from EGW with custom machining to fit Norc barrel. 9 lb spring to reduce muzzle dip on follow up. Groupings a much tighter now but sights are making me shoot low for my style.

Did my own trigger job just by polishing all internals and tweaking the sear spring. Also changed mine to single thumb safety. Found the ambi to be too bulky.

Trying to decide if I wanna send it to Dlask for front and rear sight machining.

The slide stop pin sheared right off from the right side (if that makes any sense). Its a good thing i noticed it because im pretty sure the slide would've flown right off the pistol if i hadn't
