New SK trespassing laws coming soon

Good for you ! If we all took care of our land like that there would be far fewer trespassing scum. I put trespassers in the same category as common sneak thieves. Nice to see the new $1000 fine kick in.

So this has too do with hunters in Saskatchewan in what way? You have absolutely no idea how hunting and hunting laws have existed here for 70 yrs. trespassers are not hunters, hunters are not trespassers in Saskatchewan. I guess some of us see a bigger picture here. And some of us are not so selfish that we think we do more than caretake our land for future generations. I actually like to see young hunters out with their dads on my land. Meet some new friends, enjoy the hunt. I may own the land, but I don’t own the wildlife.
And yes, there are douchebag atvers, skiddoers, fishermen, and hunters. If they cause damage to your property or livestock, laws already exist. And thieves. Follow any court cases lately?
In the 40 yrs I’ve owned land here I’ve had one or two times that I felt the need to have something “handy”. Never once has it been with people hunting. Other than “don’t hunt that way as there is a house over the hill”, I’ve not had a bad experience with hunters.
Thieves are another story. We don’t tend to rely on the goberment out in my part of Canada. The wait times are in the hours. Funny how thieves seem to decide on a new vocation when a landowner objects to their presence. “Did you phone the rc’s? Nah, they won’t be back...”
perhaps those acreage owners surrounded by crown land feel superior to the city/town folks who might want to walk a shelter belt for some sharpies. Maybe those 2500 acre owners feel they should not allow anyone on their land, 10 miles from occupied dwellings, well just because it’s mine. Pull up an rm map and tell me who owns what, and how to get ahold of them before you talk about trespassers. Post your damn land if you don’t want hunters. 4 bloody signs per 1/4, woop de doo. And enjoy Justin’s son restricting you to pellet guns in 10 yrs because we have no firearm owners left.

I didn’t even know there was such a thing as people being so disrespectful that they would not bat an eye to going onto someone else’s land to shoot/hunt. I sure don’t appreciate joe blow driving his atv all over my land looking for deer. I’d say mind your own. There’s a reason I went and spent my hard earned dollars to buy land. It’s mine, go on, get a job buy your own land to hunt on.

In Saskatchewan it is illegal to hunt from an ATV, in fact for most of the province it is illegal to carry a cased firearm on an atv. It is also illegal in a lot of zones to drive a vehicle off grids while hunting-should be all zones imho. Fortunate of you to have the cash to buy land, other people (with jobs) May have different priorities but still want to hunt. And to say it again, THERE IS ALMOST NO CROWN LAND IN SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN! Couple of acres for wildlife here and there, but a ton of farmland with no people. This is not B.C., Ontario or Alberta.

Again, there is already a system in place to control who goes on our land.

It's called posting and gives us complete control over who gets permission to access the land.

It's as simple as that.

There’s an even better system coming into law in the not-too-distant future that will save me from having to purchase and waste many hours installing no trespassing signs.

Well I suppose... it’ll give you a chance to check your fences if nothing else. Cause if your cows end up on my land... what then? I guess they must be mine, like the deer and geese and chicken? And you best not cross my fence looking for your cows, that would be trespassing. I’d have to phone the police and have you charged, and charge for whatever damage your cows did-if in fact they were still on my land...
Seems like a lot of people posting here I am real glad I don’t have as neighbors!

Couple questions.

Was the property posted?

If there had been no damage done, would you have called the police and game wardens?

There are fairly large signs every 50 yards for 1 mile of frontage on one road and the same on another road for half a mile . At the half mile the road angles away from my property although the property extends for another half mile . Had there been no damage i still would have made the calls as i have so much invested in the land for my family and friends to enjoy and no one else . A piece of recreational property was my dream for decades that i made come true a few years ago and then proceeded to build 10km of roads and clear areas for 3 large food plots . It's a matter of priorities . When others were buying jet skis , motorcycles , RVs and vacations in Jamacia i was saving my money for land and don't feel that i owe anyone access because they planned poorly . In particular i was infuriated to find the snow machine tracks 10 feet beside one of my no trespassing signs . No respect and there is unlimited riding all around the area on crown land , pipelines and tower lines .

So criminal trespass. I feel for you, but this relates to hunting in Saskatchewan how?

So you had signs and trespass laws but that still didn't stop the trespassing. What next, a ban?

I don't blame you for being compensated for the damage which is illegal on it's own.

In those years you were saving your money, did you ever use private land?

I don’t own livestock. You know what they say about assumptions.....

Of course it is. Every year the signs get shot up and removed and need to be replaced.

It would make a lot more sense if the landowners that want full access to their land were required to put up signs.

This, most land in south sask where I work is zero tillage or natural reserve grass so unless your hunting from the high grade it’s not likely welcome.

How have they been harmed?

Hurt feelings?

Why does there have to be any damage? The fact is, if it's not yours, it's someone elses. And you shouldn't need a sign to tell you that!
If you leave your apartment door unlocked, it's okay for me to come in and wander around as long as I wipe my feet first, and don't break anything?
I happen to own some choice land that many people want to hunt on. I, also, have the attitude that the elk and deer don't belong to me, so go ahead and shoot them. But, the land they are on IS mine, and you better ask before setting foot on it.

At the very least, trespassing is a display of bad manners, and indicates the type of person you are.

So vandalism, already illegal.

Are people damaging the land despite it being posted?

Irrelevant

The fundamental issue here is you believe you are entitled to use someones else's property unless they specifically notify you that you cant. If we change farm land to any other form of property you would loose you mind if the government made you have spend time and money, on top of the purchase price, to have to explicitly tell everyone that came across said property that it was yours and they can not use it without permission.

Anyone with posted land finding the land is being targeted more by ne'er do wells than not posted land? Kind of tough to gauge that one, but I've always thought that no trespassing signs could attract thieves more than discourage, particularly around yards.

Agreed. It seems very much an example of the current entitlement attitude.

Nobody is suggesting they should be able to access a farmers house without permission.

The fundamental issue is that unless there is harm done there is no victim.

As I said before, I own and have no problem with the current laws.
