New SKS--HA!

The stock must have been re-issued because it has the same serial # as the other components. So I'm assuming this is a common Russian SKS, nothing special about it. I like it. Hope it shoots well. Ok I think this is the refurb mark you were referring to, close to <>. Only saw it with the help of a flashlight.

I definitely like the way it feels, it's size and the trigger. I was a little surprised about the weight. I shot a real AK47 in Detroit and thought the weight would be similar (slightly more for SKS, bigger stock and barrel), but the SKS is quite a bit heavier, top heavy, probably due to the bayonet and assembly. I'm definitely impressed for what my $169 got me.

those are the marks, those ones always seem to be more faint compared to the [/] ones. You have a nice rifle there. Perfect for a shooter. Chances are some parts besides the stock have been changed. Original parts usually have full ser#'s including the electro pen hand written ones on the gas tube, operating rod, butt plate, bolt extractor.

edit: the x's on the butt are from the original serial number for the '51 that it was originally on. On refurb, the stocks are sanded down lightly, usually still leaving the remnants of the old tula star, year marks and serial number. They X out the serial number and stamp another one on for the new "rifle" fitted to it.

Good place to start.Give it a couple of weeks (maybe a bit more) then you will be lusting for a CZ 858. Its the way to go for a 7.62 X 39.I know,I've been there. Three SKS's two SKS-D's and then the CZ 858.Could have skipped the first two, but then where would the fun and learning be.Enjoy

That was my route too.

Welcome to the club!

Nice sks, I got mine a couple weeks ago, 189 bucks. Its in a really nice stock and all matching numbers, And not franken pinned.

The laminated stock is supposed to be better, but I like the look of the solid, myself. That one sure is sharp. Weimajack sells nice refurbs. Where I got mine.
