New SKS!!

I disassembled my SKS and soaked all the metal parts in Mineral spirits... soaked for 30 minutes and they were perfectly clean. Blew them off with compressed and re-assembled. Couldn't be easier.

I didnt use the wood stock at all, just re-assembled into a Tapco stock so that wasn't a problem at all.

Some may think this a stupid question...........

Who has changed or updated their firing pin to an aftermarket one to reduce or eliminate slam fires?

Not that I wish to invite a FORD vs CHEV debate......however..........

Which aftermarket stock is best suited to an SKS?

Great cleaning tips as well I might add.

Looking forward to all the replies.

Check the firing pin

It's pretty easy to check and make sure the firing pin is moving freely after cleaning and before each trip to the range, so untill i find one day it doesn't want to move or is getting sticky, then i might consider an aftermarket pin, but untill then, the one that is in it has been working for over 50 years now.
I have the Tapco T6 on mine, which i love the handgrip on it, it sticks to your shoulder decently once you put the rubber buttpad on it and everything fit well for me the first time.
My biggest problem was that unlike other tapco stocks it only comes with the straight tube for the butt end of the stock, which i had to jam my face into to get the sights to line up. After a few hundred round this tends to get a little tender on the cheek, which is a definite downside.
I did contact tapco and after a few emails they sent me an angled tube for free, which has worked great for me since.
I haven't tried any other stocks so i can't really compare them, but i am very satisfied with the T6 stock

Just a quick shout out to Wanstall after receiving my SKS today. I couldn't be happier with it, or the whole experience. I'll gladly do business with them again.

It's the first purchase I'll actually have to clean, but I'm looking forward to the experience.

Thanks for your reply Dand883

I think the ATI folding option is great and thats got me leaning that way over the T6.

I've heard that ATI's newest products are far superior to older designs.
Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Getting my SKS on Friday..........
Only 3 more sleeps

Which aftermarket stock is best suited to an SKS?

I bought a Choate stock from Mystic Precision (sponsor on the site, easy to deal with). I'm happy with the finish of the stock and how it makes my SKS feel in my hands - a friend described it as making the SKS into a "modern rifle". It's lighter, has a better grip and has a good LOP.

However there is a chunk of slop between my receiver and the stock that isn't present in the wood stock (which is heavier and has too short of a Length of Pull) and that is bugging me.

I can fix it with some bedding compound, but i'm not sure i can be bothered.

A friends SKS apparently has the same lever of slop in the wooden stock  so i'm going to do a trip to the range and see what switching between the stocks does for the accuracy.

BioPac,

I agree as well as long as it (FP) keeping floating and shows no sign of sticking I'll leave it be.
Will however investigate aftermarket FP makers to see what is available.

Just got my SKS also. Is it possible it's new?

The entire rifle looks 100% brand new. Mind you it's covered in goo. :p

Thanks Wanstall's

Oh yes, not enough soap will cause electroplating on the aluminum turning it dark grey and etched.

Welcome to the world of Russian puke (Cosmoline) The stuff is a wonder preservant. The gun could be 100 years old, But still be like new when you get it and clean the stuff off. But that's the price you have to pay, getting the sticky smelly goo off of it.

That was a lot of fun. Degreaser and brake clean did the trick.

It was a refurb btw, but so clean, so fun.

Do not get simple green on the wood. It will strip the finish. Oh man it is so nice where I am in Florida. 40 degrees and cheap Stella Artois.
