I've been using my old Rem 870 Wingmaster with the smooth iron sighted slug barrel and temped by the new rifled barreled slug guns out there these days. Some amazing accuracy!

Just wondering, it seems like the Savage 220F and the Ithica (new) mod 37 Deerslayer III are both getting rave reviews.

Any opinions on which might be the better choice? Or perhaps it just comes down to bolt vs pump? I like the idea of a clip vs tube, but the pump might be quicker in a hurry...dunno, hard to say without handling both I guess.

Not likely that will happen around here anytime soon. Can Tire doesn't plan to stock either H:S:

Savage 220

I have the savage with the Leupold ultimate slam scope I shot my first deer with it one shot right in the heart 200 yards

Okkkk...sooo, you are saying the 'rapid' reload capabilities of the pump weren't a factor in your hunt...in other words you are very happy with the bolt savage, right?

Thanks for the feedback!

I've had a couple of the Savage 210's and they are crazy accurate...for all intents and purposes they're big bore rifles. The new ones are even better, with accutriggers and detachable mags. If they are like mine, they will only reliably extract and eject 3-inch shells, which was a pain because they were more accurate with 2 3/4. Replacing the one piece scope mount with a two piece helped a bit.

Haven't tried the Deerslayer, but aren't they twice the price of the 210's? IIRC, they have fixed barrels, so they should shoot well.

Well not sure on the 'bottom line' when it comes to pricing...I thought I read the Deerslayer III came with a scope mounted? Or perhaps i read 'scope mount'...

In any case I'm pretty sure it will be one of those 2 units, scope or no scope, I'm sure I can find a suitable scope for whichever unit I end up with.

Have you got any prices on the Deerslayer yet?
The thing looks like the cats axx for deer hunting around here.

Gotta admit those are some good prices at Epps for the 210s.

No I haven't, no one seems to have the III in stock just yet. Lots of time, the season's finished here until next fall anyway.

Fun to look and see whats around though! A guy's gotta have a plan!

Holy crap dutch, no way this pup is paying 1500 for a slug gun just on principle! I was thinking maybe 800 or 900, but that is just silly.

Is it just the barrell or does the receiver/bolt have a design advantage over other pumps?

You could just buy a rifled cantilever barrel for the Wingmaster.....

This is true, however...I have never had a chance to have a close look at the 'cantilever' on a cantilever barrel, and it always looked ( in the pictures anyway...) like a rather precarious perch for a scope.

Just doesn't inspire thoughts of 4" groups at 200 yds.

But maybe I'm just being too judgemental d:h:

In terms of reasonably priced slug guns - either the H&R Ultra Slug Hunter Dlx or the Savage 220 in 20ga will offer the requisite performance standards sought for in a rifle bbl'd deer shotgun.

They don't get good reviews at all, just because they are too lightly made.
If I was going to do that I would get a Mossberg barrell for the 870.

I just recently purchased a Savage 220 F; I hope that it is capable of the same results that yours is. I guess I need to mount a scope on it, pick up some 20 gauge slugs and give it a try. :) Lots of time, next November is a long ways away.

been using a deerslayer1 with a s&b 1.5to6 for about 15years with rem copper solids works great .if you get one watch to not pull back on the slide when you pull the trigger or you will throw your shot off.my outfit keeps all slugs touching at 100yrds.If somebody made a lefty bolt I would probably go that route for some situations
