Ok you blackpowder cartridge experts out there,

Here's my problem. I have some new (Jamison) brass for my Snider that (being new) is too tight to take my .588 dia. lead bullets.
After firing once, they expand out enough to take the bullets.

For the first firing is it enough to put a lubed wad & patch on top of the blackpowder & then fire?
Or do I need to get an undersize ball (say .500 or .540) & shoot that the first time?

I did think that I would just hammer down a few of the bullets I have, a bit smaller until they fit & then fire ...but..... as I hammered, the cannelures closed up, so I had to file them open. So 1-1/2 bullets hammered & 60 minutes later I am thinking that it was not such a good idea.

So will either of the other ideas above work.

You have described a very strange set of circumstances. Do you have a set of dies?

With Lee anyways, one of the dies will flare the mouth, and then the lubed 0.588" bullet can be seated with the seating die. The brass will stretch some to accomodate it.
 
new brass

I brought 20 brass. One of them was "fireformed" with an odd smaller ball I found & it now will accept the .588 bullets & also will go back into the chamber. I have fired that one case about 10-12 times.

So I know when fired it will work OK but I have no more smaller balls available unless I buy a whole box. Hence my question will a patch/wad work.

I do not yet have Snider dies because when I ordered them the wrong dies arrived, so I cannot flare the neck yet. I do have a hand decapper & primer so if I can blow out the case I can fire it anyway in the meantime.

I have some jamison brass to and had to use my expander on them they come with a bottle neck found it best to fire form first with a box of .570 round balls I had I found that the lee dies I have put the bottle neck back but the CH-4D dies I got from Kerry do not . so If I use the Lee dies I just part size.
But Beater is right mag tech 24 gauge brass is the best just cut it down Bruno at Bullseye reloading may still have some cut that Kerry made. Kerry has some brass left but not much.
 
A couple snider shootin guys said they expanded the new Jameson brass using OD of old CO2 pellet cylinder. I have used this method but it is easy to oversize new brass and it will not chamber. However most of my rds did work okay.
I have a few Sniders and I beleive there will be different minor chambering issues with each, once I've shot them all.
