New source for non-pinned AR mags: Mossberg MVP?

Recently, Mossberg introduced their new "Mossberg MVP" bolt action rifle. According to their literature, it takes STANAG mags.

I remember reading discussion on the Remington 7615P pump action, which takes AR mags, and the discussion being that Remington originally shipped these rifles with unpinned 10 rounders, but because they advertised the rifle as AR mag compatible, the mags were actually prohibited and all later 7615P mags were pinned at 5.

Now, if Mossberg doesn't advertise their mags as AR compatible, would they be able to sell these rifles with standard capacity mags? And, if so, maybe some of our Canadian distributors should make sure that Mossberg doesn't make the same mistake Remington did.

If Mossberg advertises the rifles as taking AR magazines, dollars to donuts any Mossberg magazine is going to be deemed to be an AR magazine.

I don't think it would matter since the mags are designed for a rifle and would have to be limited to 5 rounds wouldn't it? We get away with the 10 round LAR mags only because they were designed for a pistol.

A big marketing feature is the AR mag so I doubt they will not say that in any literature.

Only magazines designed or manufactured for use in a semi-automatic center-fire rifle are limited to 5 rounds.

So it's an ar15 mag? Then it will be stuck with the same capacity it is right now.

If it was a MVP mag, and also happened to fit an AR then it may be different. But likely it is not.

Same situation as the Remington 7615P. RCMP will say it was designed to use AR15 magazines, therefore all magazines for it are AR15 magazines.

Unless Mossberg produces their own MVP mag and clearly labeled and submitted to the RCMP lab to have it approved, than it might have a leg to stand on, but they just going to throw in a mag from another manufacturer than it will have to be pinned.

It is what it's original design was that counts.

Now if Remington would get off it's ass. I would have to have a couple of them. And a ten round pistol mag would be sufficient in a gopher gun.

Not all "STANAG" mags are created equal, either. Look at the whole Magpul EMAG thing, for instance.. The exact dimensions could be a dealbreaker.

It still sounds like a sucker's bet to me, though.

Yes, we have been here before. I'd bet the outcome will be exactly the same.

Nope.

Mag limits are based on what gun it was designed and manufactured for. Not what gun you are using it in.

Unless they design and make mags for this rifle that happen to work in an AR and not simply make it use AR mags, they will be limited to 5 rounds.

You would still be able to use LAR 10 rounds mags in this rifle.
