I want a new stock for my CZ 550, but I dont know what ones are good at a reasonable price.
Are stocks made only for one brand? or will one for a rem 700 work for a CZ 550 too?

Also untill I get the new stock how is the best way to paint my current laminate stock? I want it flat black, but for some reason think that just roughing it up and spraying it wont hold up too long.

I believe McMillan is making them. Remington is a different pattern, but if you don't mind the trouble, you can probably make a syn. Rem work...lots of work..

Stocks

You can have one duplicated, or order a CZ stock from most dealers.
Or you can go to many Gunsmiths,,and they have blanks, that can be
inletted to your gun. There a lots of options depending on what you
want.
Dave Henry in Bentley has a stock duplicating machine as well as
blanks to work with. The local gunshops around Edmonton can tell
you what is available pretty quickly. For used stocks I would drop
over the lock and load as they have many.

I will have to stop by lock and load sometime this week then.
Do they have the good used stocks too? or jsut factory take offs?

McMillan makes 1 stock for your 550 called a Baker special, it has a drop belly to accomodate the the deep action.
Be aware changing stocks on a CZ is not as simple as most rifles IE Remington,Winchester et al. The trigger group is part of the bottom metal , hence spacing from action to bottom metal is critical.
To take a non inletted or wrong inletted stock and try to fit it to rhe CZ would be a HUGE undertaking.
To paint you laminate is not a big deal, do NOT go through the factory finish, as the laminated stocks are very thirsty for paint. The factory seals them very well, so simply rub it down with 320 grit to break the glaze, wipe it down with thinner and spray it with Arma coat, or truck bedliner. Both are far more durable than paint.
CZ has HS Precision make stocks for them they can be ordered aftermarket, in my opinon , that would be your best option, not cheapest however.
