I have a comercial FN mauser in .308 win. The stock has split near the grip behind the action. Is there an aftermarket stock that would fit this action, such as boyd's? what about a synthetic?

thanks,

Boyds makes a Mauser 98 stock. So do all the other stock makers. but beware - they are only semi-inlet, despite with 99%+ claims. The Boyds Mauser 98 pattern is too tall through the receiver area and you need to really slim it down to fit it right.

Ram-line and ATI make synth stocks at the lower end. Bell & Clarson, McMillan, etc. also make them.

Maybe try a Richard's microfit or GAG stock. they require less work than the Boyds to come out nice.

The FN is a large ring 98. Same stock as a K98k except that there is no thumb cut.

Semi-inlets come without the thumb cut and leave it up to you to decide if you want to cut it or not.

If you glass bed it with Accra-glas gel or epoxy with mini-fibers added, the epoxy acts as a crossbolt. Mausers are a little short on recoil lug. I put mine in Parker-Hale stock as a temperary fix.

so, now I'm faced with buying a new stock for it and money is tight right now.
Unless someone has a used stock they are willing to part with, I can only afford a ramline or buttler creek. Which is better?

If that's the case, repair the stock you have now and make due with it until you can afford a decent stock. That's what I'ld do in your situation anyway.....

well I may be able to but it is pretty bad. someone years ago had a bad fall and just about broke the stock in half at the wrist. The rest of it is fine(no marks or scratches on the barrel/receiver). I really just wont to get it up and running for hunting season.

I've got a stock off an FN mauser that you can have for the cost of shipping. I replaced it because the fore-end warped downward about a month after I finished making it:mad:

It's English walnut with an ebony fore-end tip and grip cap. It needs a 1" recoil pad to get it back to a standard length of pull.

Also, the rifle it came off of has had the rear tang filed down so the top of the pistol grip has a straighter line. The top of your rear tang would be about 3/16" higher than the wood.

Some fitting would be required.

PM me if you're interested.
