hey guys, i've got a stock remington 700 ss in 7mm rem mag, I'm looking to make the gun a bit more accurate and was wondering what kind of stock i should replace the factory one with? bell and carlson? hogue overmould? what are your thoughts? oh and i will be using it for hunting as well as just shooting so i don't want any 30lb stocks! thanks guys

"...stock touches the barrel...and..." It synthetic or wood? Touching the barrel is easily fixed(called floating the barrel) with a bit of sand paper. Mind you, some Rem 700's like a pressure point. The flexing is a bit more complicated, but not by much. Involves putting a stiffener in the fore stock. Usually an Al rod.
"I want a new one." is reason enough though. You do need to decide how much money you want to spend and whether you want wood or synthetic.

it's currently synthetic, i would like to stick with synthetic. I would like a better feeling stock in my hands as well, i'm willing to spend about $300 or so. I have too many projects on the go to do the free floating and stiffening myself and would like a better bedding block system that isn't plastic because i have been told that it will improve my accuracy. although that information could have come from someone trying to sell a stock...

Rem 700 7mm mag SS Robertson Stock

Just picked up my Rem 700ss Rem 7mm mag at VZ Systems Ltd had a Robertson Hunting stock that Ian inlet-ted and pillar bedded action, he did a very nice job.(like all his work)
gun fits me like a glove. weight 7lb 3 oz got my scope mounted perfectly with Hart Rings mount on action no bases,10 times the quality of Talleys, when I cheek gun everything is centered no ahead and back no lifting head to get a full scope view. I have found good well made stocks reduce recoil and you shoot better groups when barrel is free floated.

how much does it generally cost to get a custom built stock? or at least get a stock that's got solid bedding, free floating barrel and a good way to adjust length of pull?
