New stock for the savage

A word of caution ordering a Choate for a Savage.

Savage changed bolt distances several times on their production run that secure the receiver to the stock.

Some Choates would not fit due to the distance change.

I went through it twice to get the right stock for my 12 BVSS.

I'm not a fan of the "Ultimate Sniper", it was the "Varmint" I'm interested in. Must admit though, the B&C is a nice looking stock.

What can you do to improve the Savage OEM stock ? I have a Mark II tupperware stock I need to improve also.

For what it is worth, I just took delivery of a Choate Ultimate Varmint for my 10FP and I really like it. Agreed, it is a bit bulky and certainly would be a pain to lug around as a field gun and the pistol grip isn't for small hands, but for me it really works well. I ordered mine thru Wolverine Supplies which is a CGN sponsor (of course being over the entirely arbitary US$100 price I couldn't order one in the US even if I had wanted to) and I was impressed by their service. Bottom, entirely subjective, line: I think the Choate it is a big improvement over the factory one which ,unlike many, I didn't think was all that crappy to start with. Choate certainly wasn't expensive and, importantly to me, it was a true 'drop in' with no additional work required.

I read somewhere that you can sand down the pistol grip to make it slimmer.

The OEM stock is a little to "bendy" for my tastes, I'm looking for something solid.

I saw a modified Medalist stock int he US and the owner cut the wider sections of the forend off and sanded it smooth to make the sides level, it worked out very well.

I've got a Savage with a Choate Ultimate Varmint stock and I really like it. It fits me perfectly and I like the feel of it. I think it just all comes down to personal preferance.

Steve,

I was referring to the pistol grip on the Choate Ultimate Varmint Stock not to the for-end. Its suppose to be quite large, I read somewhere that you can reduce it buy sanding it to fit you.

Rick,

I read there is an issue with the new Savage actions that have the wider spaced action bolts. Does B&C make stocks to fit the new actions?

The Medalist stocks I have brought in to date have all been for the new style(accutrigger) s/a version which has a round action, and have no issues yet with any not fitting.
I suspect that the older (pre accutrigger) models may not fit these stocks.
The Medalist stocks have an aluminum bedding block ala HS Precision, I still think skim bedding them is best, but I have sold quite a few of these stocks and not 1 problem.
Maybe tomorrow......

DON'T BUT A CHOATE!!! I would definately agree with Rick on this one (not like I would ever disagree with him when it comes to this stuff). I once owned a 10FP with a Choate stock and will never own one again. I really did not like the feel of the stock.

X2, Lance is right on this one and having handle his Choate FP, I would never spend that amount of money for it since there is way better & more comfortable stocks on the market today.

Has anyone ask GunBoy's advice on this?

I bought this one from Rick to replace my 700 VLS stock. I'm very happy with it and ATRS service was great.

so what kind of stock is this ? and how much do they go for ?

That's a Bell & Carlson Medalist Varmint/Tactical adjustable, Rick has one for sale on his web-sight. I think this model is available for only the 700, send Rick a PM he will be able to tell you for sure.

I was in ATR probably 2 months ago now and apparently they come for the savage too..i was kicking myself because i got the B&C Varmint that isn't adjustable..i think they are in the $525-550 range if my memory serves me correctly...they sure look nice.
