Well a few months back I ordered a new McMillan A5 stock from John at JWPrecision. And today McMillan will be shipping it to me. I'm putting it on my Rem. 700 chambered in 308. It's a 26" Varmint barrel, all matte black. The stock is OD green. Also it's left handed! I'll be sure to post some pictures when I get it all together. Now to save up for some good glass :)

This also means my left handed SPS Varmint stock will now be for sale if anyone is interested. I'll also post an add in the exchange forum.

Well I haven't completely made up my mind yet, but since I bought the rifle to use as a base for an F-class build up over time, I have really been thinking about the Nightforce benchrest scopes. Although I've noticed they now have a Bushnell 6500 Elite Tactical in 5-30X which might be worth a look since it's at least 800 less than the NF :)

Southpaw,

If F-class is your ultimate destination, stick with plan-A. Tactical scopes generally do not make optimal target scopes. Mil-dot and duplex reticles are generally too large, and cluttered for the ICFRA targets. Furthermore, only having 1/4MOA adjustments for long range zeroing sucks. (The ICFRA F-Class short range center is .4MOA... go figure).

You will NEVER regret investing in top end optics.

Yes, that's what I keep thinking as well, that if i end up getting a cheaper one just because it's cheaper I will still want the better one anyway, so I think I'll likely end up saving for the NF and just do it right once.

Have you guys bedded a McMillan stock before? I've been researching it and it seems the MarineTex or Devcon would be the best choice?

I have never had an opportunity to look through a NF. But I just got a Bushnell 6500 4.5-30 56 MOA for my 700 5R from ColtM4 and while doing the trade I got to look through a Leupold Mk4 3.5-10 M3 and I could NOT see much difference to my eye. I really like the 6500 so far and it is far better than the Banner's I was used to.

My next scope will either be another Elite 6500/4200 for my other 308 or a NF for the 5R with the 6500 going to the Model 70 308. The extra MOA for the NF may be worth the cost for your application.

Good luck with your build!

Ok, stock just came in today! I'm taking off the old SPS stock and just putting the A5 on now. I will bed it eventually, but will probably shoot it at least once before that to see how it is. Pics to come soon!

Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Just got the stock on a few hours ago. I'll be sure to give a report of how it shoots compared to the old SPS stock. I've got about 50 rounds of hand loaded ammo left, so that should be enough to get a good idea.
