picked up my new savage model 10 max pred in 6.5 creed moor today. topped with a xiii 6-24x50lrmoa. hopefully the weather holds on the weekend to get some shooting in. bought 140 amax and 129 sst for barrel breakin and brass. Thanks to Harley and Clay at Prophet River for the advise and help on my purchase. when i figure out how to post pics i will do so.

I have the same rifle in .223 and it shoots pretty good. If you get bored some day read an article on tuning the action with a torque wrench. It tightened up my groups a little.

Seems I've seen that before bit can't remember where. I'm gonna be helping out Blackbeard as much as I can with his spanky new rifle and would like to know where I can find this again - if you don't mind, please. Thanks!

Boooooooo , Tightening groups via having different amounts of torque on the f/r actions screws. Does nothing be introduce stress into the action , any time you need to remove the action from the stock , or go from temp extremes. All the precious fiddling around you've done goes out the window. Your better off to have the action properly bedded into the stock so it's fully supported . And then develope an accurate load

I'm not against bedding an action at all, never said I was but once you know what the values are it is repeatable if you take it out. Anyone who doesn't use a torque wrench on an action is putting stress on it because they can't get the same amount on each screw/bolt by feel. My Cooper which comes from the factory bedded (and a very nice job too) has two different torque values on the action screws if I remember correctly. Do those guys know what they're doing?

Went out to the range with rooster yesterday and had a ball.the mirage at 600/1000 was brutal but we did what we could. Shooting all factory ammo,129 sst grouped well out to 264 yds, actually had a three shot group inside a dime at 100 yd but no witness.i personally have never shot that well. So I was pretty happy with that. Shooting the 140 amax went just as we'll. Shot those at 264 and farther mostly. Shot a 8"w and 4" h group at 600yd half way thru the day. Obviously the width is most likely me and my technique. The height of that group makes me optimistic.never hit the gong at 1000,need more practice. For the first day with my CM and rig setup I am quite happy.very little recoil felt. Fired 100 rounds and no soreness! With much more practice and hand loads my goal is sub moa at 600 yds. Time will tell

Sounds like the rifle is wanting to shoot for you.

Is there a 1000 yard range in that part of the country or are you just shooting in the country? Im looking for a decent range to stretch the distance a bit.

I measured out a 1000 range in 100 yard increments down an old field road. Now I need time and weather to cooperate.

Sask_Hunter; I have a range set up at the farm in the Saskatoon area that goes to 1050. Other places around too that I could stretch out much further once I get my other, much more portable targets made up. PM me if you'd like to come out some time - if you're in the area.

All in all, it was a pretty good day with Blackbeard. Hotter than a two dollar pistol out and it wreaked havoc on our dope, plus the mirage was almost as much of a challenge. 600 wasn't too bad but at 1050, it almost seemed like a guessing game. Thought I had it figured for a full minute down from my last recorded dope and hit the gong several times in a row. But about 15 minutes later, I couldn't buy a hit! A bit frustrating but all part of the curve, I suppose:)

That is a dandy little rig you have there, Blackbeard. I just can't wait until the shine has worn off a little and you'll actually share!:jerkit:

Nakomis has a 1000 yard range.

Sounds like one heck of a range close to the city.

Thanks for the invite Rooster. Maybe we can set some thing up late July - aug. I've got a bunch of steel plates and have a few more on the way.

Can a guy shoot steel at nikomis or is it a paper only deal?

Sure thing, keep in touch. My July and August are kinda wonky, as far as work goes but I will be out there as much as I can when I'm home. I don't know for sure but I doubt the Nokomis range allows steel, seeing as it's a PRA range.

ha: Goot one! (say it like Inspector Cluseau:p)

PRA: Provincial Rifle Association. Where they are part of the DCRA (Dominion of Canada Rifle Association...I think) and shoot F-class and F-TR (Target Rifle). I have no idea how those dudes can shoot a damn .223 or .308 to 1000 with friggin' irons....but hats way off!

i will be game for another day in Aug. should have all my reloading stuff in order by then. Very interested to see if handloads are much better than factory with my current skill level.
