-Doesn't need fire forming.
-Less velocity and powder for reduced cost per shot (powder and barrel wear).
-Space in magazine to fit heavy 6mm bullets at ideal seating depth inside case.
Edit: I forgot initially that the AI has a steeler shoulder than the GT. Changed list.

Everything to Jim's choice is applicable except for the last one - single loading g only in F/O competition

Performance isn't free
Lower velocity is a longer flight time, leading to greater wind affect
A 2.950" mag length matches up very nicely with most match grade bullets.

I'm not too sure why the F/Open guys are shooting the smaller cased 6's either, as you say, flight time is a bit of a consideration, unless the majority are using them for only the short to mid range matches. They are very competitive inside 700.
There are some shooting them at the long ranges though .
I know of one very prominent PRS winner that is using the 243AI - at least he was, and likes it .

He's not wrong in that regard. But the smaller ones tend to be more accurate. There's a few reasons you don't see 243 AI and similar in the bench rest circles. - danthat would apply to about ALL the LITTLE 6 MM catridges ! 6 ARC 6 BR 6 BRA 6 Dasher 6 XC 6x47L ! lol

The little 6 s are very nice to shoot recoil wise and very accurate ! The wind really hurts the 223 Guys and 6 Guys at long range if it’s windy - But if it’s calm they can Win . One of guys shot a 75/75 with 10 V Bulls at 800 meters ( 880 yards ) the other day with his 6 Dasher and a 105 Hybrid . I got mine for the short range stuff 3-6 hundred but I will try it at 800

I thought you had said in a different forum you were a gunsmith. I couldn’t quite remember.
Picturing something like a golfer with a bag of clubs - get to the match and pull out one rifle if it's a calm day, different one if it's blustery.
On the gunsmith question others are asking, a lot of us will do things like barrel changes, scope mounting, trigger group adjustments or changes, even building a whole rifle from components that a new shooter might ask a gunsmith to do, so the bar before a task is enough to go looking for someone with more experience and/or equipment does vary quite a lot.
