New technology for snipers

I think there's only one technology innovation that's really made a sniper's job easier . . .

Of course I wouldn't know, not being one. But I think this super-rifle thing is . . . overblown.

Sure why not, all weapons have gone through tremendous tech changes. Compare a modern bombing run to even a Viet Nam era bombing run, why not rifles too? Don't replace the training though, as you need the skills with the all weather journal to fall back in the event of a tactical EMT taking out your electronics. :)

It's cool tech, but when batteries die, and water and muck or whatever go in the fritz, it goes back to basics. What happens when the rifle shot breaks and a miss happens or a hostage gets shot because off a computer error.
"Well I don't know what happened, I tagged the target and it broke when it was on target, but I didn't get the latest update so I am guessing it crashed".

Just playing the devils advocate, but its a touchy subject as it is. I would rather high degree of training as opposed to "anyone can do it" and then all goes to crap.

You'd be aiming, and a window would popup telling you your drivers are outdated and asking if you'd like to renew your subscription.

Haha, that's freaking funny. Half the time I can't log into Netflix without an update so it would suck to be like "please connect to a local wifi before proceeding with shot"

Does it use radar or some other way to calculate wind? Too expensive anyway; budget and bureaucracy almost always win. Its way easier to blame the operator when things go sideways than blame the office functionary who signed the purchase order. In the end the blame game is far more important internally than protection of the public anyway. Sad.

lol that's why you make sure you buy the Linux model....stay away from the MS Sniper OS. You don't want your rifle telling you it needs to reboot in 15 seconds due to an update without giving you an option to postpone.

Ding, ding, ding... give this man a prize.

This funky dunky scope DOES NOT READ THE WIND. It is a user input function..... a user that is reading off a Kestral or some other wind meter at their location. A user that is not expected to have any experience in reading winds... ummmm

Best part of this scope - you cannot hold OFF target to compensate for the wind. Think about it.....

PS there are wind reading scopes coming.....

As a cost cutting measure, for the training of police qualified sniper, I can see these put into use.

These sighting systems are priced for the govt. the initial course will probably qualify a person as a "sniper" on this system.

I still believe, all snipers should receive the "roots" of precision shooting, as technology does fail, some must rely on your training.

All that being said, I sure would love one. :)

When this device fails, it will render the entire platform useless.

There is no "real" reticle and the firing system will/should lock up the firing process. Remember it is the computer that discharges the firearm NOT the user.

The user can only ask permission....

Becomes a $20K club.

For the naysayers, how many of these has remington ordered? Do scouts paint targets with lasers now? Has smart bomb technology improved accuracy? You guys who are bashing this are the very same guys touting the merits of great optics, which is merely improved aiming system that replaced irons, and now a technology that improves the optic aiming system and you lambaste it????? brilliant, just brilliant.

It really demonstrates the lack of understanding of what a aiming system is designed to do, which is increase the odds for a greater number of users, while minimizing training costs. This is change, get used to it, or get left behind.

Sure it takes the human element out of shooting straight, but that's EXACTLY what you want to do, unless of course you shoot for bragging rights.

This is GREAT technology!!!! for those who wish to increase the odds of hitting the target.

No different than any rifle, optic or ammo, when it fails it fails. So.

No reason not to buy it especially since computers are more consistent than humans, for the most part.

"...because off a computer error..." Machines don't make mistakes. No machine does anything it wasn't told to do. In any case, police marksmen and real snipers are two very different things. A cop doesn't need to be concealed or have the level of fieldcraft skills a real sniper has. No machine will help a real sniper.
