I just picked up a new Tikka T3 Varmint in 300 WSM, and just loaded up some new bullets to start load development, only to discover that the bolt does not move far enough back in order to load the next cartridge. Either that, or the magazine is incorrect. Has anybody come across this?

Here are some pictures:

Top: Bolt all the way back showing that the cartridge needs to be moved forward, or the bolt further back

Middle: Cartridge mounted full back

Bottom: Where the cartridge would have to be in the mag in order to load a new shell

Get the long action bolt stop and you won't have any problems. Can also load the bullets closer to the lands that way. Did this with my 7mm-08 using the 30-06 mag. Works like a charm.

that's a L for long action, you need a S for short action........did you purchase the rifle new?? I bet someone bought the other rifle and cannot figure out why a loaded round won't fit in their 300 wim mag yet a fired brass will

I thought the short mag mags were marked "SM"

OP, definitely the wrong mag

Wrong mag - you need the short mag. But -- you can also order a long action bolt stop and swap that out so you can utilize the full length for optimal handloading!

I modified the bolt stop. Very easy. Works like a charm. Also lightened up the trigger to 2 lb while I was in there. Thx for the help.

If the bolt stop is one solid piece, it should hold up well but if it is the molded metal with a hollow stop block, it might break down the road. Just an FYI.
