I want to get a 223rem to initiate the yongsters and the GF to longrange shooting and having nothing between the 308 and the 22lr I think the 223 would be pretty good for them

I want to shoot 70gr berger vld or 77SMK in a 1-9 barrel and I was thinking of using varget since it is already a good powder for the 308

I dont need to get the maximum velocity the cartridge can give, I just want it to be accurate
I dont want to have a different load for each season so I will definitely stick on singlebase

any suggestions?

Have been trying to work up a load for 77 gr. SMKS using IMR4895 but have not found any load that has worked to my satisfaction.

Going to try another test with Varget. Just scored 10 lbs from LeBaron.

I have a 1-9" Savage .223 bolt action and I can't stabilize anything heavier than 69gr SMK's; everything heavier has a 10 MoA pattern instead of group. Even at that I have had to go a grain or two below starting values to get good accuracy (under 2 MoA) out of them so my velocity is probably pretty poor (haven't chronied them).
H4895 proved most accurate in my rifle but Benchmark is pretty close. Both, below starting values from the Hodgdon website, are under 1 MoA.
Loaded up some with H4198 and CFE223 but haven't fired them yet. Not expecting much based on online reviews but figured I'd give it a try.

I have had great success with H4895 and IMR 4895 in my Ruger M77 in 223. I tried Varget and it wasn't satisfactory. Gave up on Varget as I was having such stellar success with H4895.

Hornaday 50 gr V-Max, 53 gr HP Match, 60 gr SP and 68 gr BTHP all worked very well (re: accuracy). I have not foundbabsatisfactory 55 gr bullet that works for me yet.

GREAT caliber for introducing kids to something larger than 22 or 17 HMR. Enjoy!

I've had luck with 52 gr HDY match bthps and IMR 4320. Funnily I also get good results from the 75 gr bthp match with 4320. The 50 and 55 gr zmax work pretty good too, just not quite as good as the 52 gr bthp. Have had nothing work in the 68 gr range or 75 gr Amax in my 1:9 Rem 5R. Just my 2 cents.

Read this link below and look at the twist rates and stabilization, I also have a Savage with a 1 in 9 twist and the bullets you have selected are not accurate with that twist rate.

I can shoot the bullets below from my AR15 with a 1 in 7 twist, "BUT in my Savage bolt action and AR15 A2 HBAR with a 1 in 9 twist you can forget it.

You can shoot the heavy bullets above from a 1 in 9 twist barrel but they are only good for shooting suppressive covering fire in a Zombie attack and have plenty of 30 round magazines. (Zombie/stabilisation humor) :ar15:

I've had great results using benchmark and 69gr smks in a 9 twist. I think the 77gr smk will be too heavy for a 9 twist.

Very interesting article - great read. Thanks bigedp51 for posting.

Interesting that I've more or less settled on the Hdy 52 gr match bthp for my Rem 5R with 1:9 twist. Funny that I also get good results with the 75 gr match bthp, but based on the data thye have it looks more like a fluke, and I think I'll focus on the 52s from here on out. May also explain why the 50 gr Zmax works pretty good too.

Maybe I'll try some 4895 with the 52 gr bthp for some fun this weekend.
