New to 3 gun: pump or semi and why

I have been mulling this question over for a while now and still can't find an answer. Right now I am running a highly pollished 870 express with 11 round capacity. My main shooting partner runs a versamax with all the bells and whistles. Now I'm not to be cocky but I run a pump quite fast as far as pumps are concerned and I keep finding myself beat by the versamax.
We have switched guns around before and near as I can tell it all comes down to loading speed. With fast and efficient quad loads the versamax will win everytime but if the pump shooter can get rounds in the gun quickly he has the advantage (provided the stage allowes fully loaded gun)
I think the takeaway is how much time you have to shoot. If you have lots of time to practice shooting a pump at lightspeed then go that route but if not you can practice quad loading a semi while at home.

You nailed it. It's all about loading the shotgun. The fastest and smoothest loader will win nearly every time. My biggest complaint about three gun, it comes down to shotgun loading which tests exactly 1 skill... If you look at the history of 3 gun the shotgun was an after thought that shouldn't be there. 2 gun for the win! ;)

At the IPSC Level 3 shotgun match held this weekend (14 stages & 180 round count), 7 of the top 10 in standard division (semi) used a Benelli M2 (top 2 used M2, not sure about 3rd)
There was also a Stoeger M3k, a Versamax and I'm not sure of what 3rd place was using.
seems 3" chambers and the much talked about capacity disadvantage didn't really come into play.

In Standard Manual (pump) I believe top 3 were using Benelli nova/supernova

Just posting this as some real world data for those interested.

Lots of guys can do fast deuces and quads...it’s math and movement that differentiate the top shooters.

Doesn’t matter how fast you load, if your stage planning sucks and/or you have to make up shots due to misses, you are not going to win.

Obviously misses are an issue but a fast loader will still have the advantage. Most stages are rather easy which makes loading the deciding factor amongst the top shooters.

You should find more challenging matches to shoot...

Re read my post, "...amongst the top shooters." If you can't hit sh*t it doesn't matter if your shotgun was belt fed. For those with some skills the determining factor is reloading. Shotguns shouldn't be part of three gun to begin with(should be 2 gun) but as it stands they are a part and sadly are what often determines the winner.
