Thats -AWESOME- but beware black powder is the most addictive substance known to man!!
Being in Nova Scotia you have the good fortune to be near a very good company LOYALIST ARMS..

I think you need to shoot a military flint lock smoothbore, but beware- brown bess just may steal ALL your spare time!
Brown bess is the worlds most successful military arm, she has taken more land and defeated more foes then ANY arm since.

I have about 15 or 16 black powder guns mostly 58 cal muskets.

Springfield 1863 Pederosoli (1) 58 cal
Sharps Carbine 54 cal Model 1863 (1)
Pederosoli Tryons one 50 and other one 45 (2)
CVA 32 cal squirrel gun for my daughter never fired (1)
Uberti 1860 (1)
Uberti 1861 (1)
Uberti Remington 44 (1)
Flint Pistol Italion 69 cal (1)
Percussion Italion 50 cal (1)
Model 1834 Cohorn Mortar Full Size about a 7" bore and weighs about 250 to 275 lbs
Thare must be a few more that I have missed.
If I would have kept the Parker Hale Witworth I would have had just about all of the Parker Hale Muskets.
I guess it is a sickness once you start into black powder firearms.
If you are looking for a Bess buy a Pedersoli you might have to reharden the frizzen as some are soft. Loyalist Arms imports some good stuff, the only exception to that, I saw one Long Land Pattern Bess and it wasn't anything I would show up to a range or a reanactment with. A friend of mine who is a F&I living history paid $1000 or more for it and he sent it back. I saw the gun and it was something you would put over a fireplace if no one really knew what one should look like. That's the only thing negative I ever heard or saw so don't judge them on one situation. They gave the guy a refunded without any problems.

My long land came as a "specials" kit from loyalist, after alot of sanding and stock forming and then staining and stock oiling in a unknown amount of hand rubbed coats, It is really the finest bess I have seen, I have been to a couple reinactments.
The better of ANY piedersoli bess I have seen to date including my own, in performance.
In the like when other guys besses were clicking...Mine was booming..
I really love that hand forged lock!! and stout springs!!

Mr ALBAYO..-I WISH YOU WERE IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO!!, Most of the guys I know only have those center fires , and just have no understanding of the joy of muskets and black powder.
Thus I mostly shoot alone or with them as a audience watching , too afeared of all the smoke and fire.

stick with thompson.......for now
I had a few muzzle loaders (10+) but my first one was a Thompson Centre Hawkens .50 cal...percusion...I would recommend sticking to this as a first step..then move to something else as you feel like...Loyalist Arms provided me with a nice flintlock but I am still trying to find the right balls for the odd caliber they make musket in (.67 ?)...my opinion...Thompson makes true .50 cal barrel (others do too)... in my opinion Thompson is a sure bet to start from.

X 2 Buy a TC or Lyman in .50 or .54 to start with. Easy to get round ball and caps for it. Accurate to shoot. Once you get into it you can decide whether you want to play with flintlocks and oddball calibres.
