I went to the local toy store :) wanting to try out some buckshot. I didn't realize there were so many choices and got a bit flustered. As i'm still trying to find ideal hunting/trap loads for myself, i kinda need some help. What's the best brand, what # works for what, and are the upper-grades really worth it? I'm also wondering what kind of buck would work best in my 18.5" truck gun as opposed to the 26" huntin' gun.

For trap loads I think you would be better off with bird shot, than buckshot. I don't shoot trap so what size specifically I don't know. As for hunting loads, what are you hunting for? I use slugs for deer and bear, 3" steel bb for waterfowl, 2-3/4" #4 birdshot for rabbits and grouse, 00 buck for varmints. As for brand, try a few out on a pattern board, then use what patterns well in your gun.

Trap loads

For shooting clays #7 1/2 or number #8 some guys use #9 for skeet but its
not too common off the shelf fare. The premium loads are good if you reload, as most hulls are superior as well as the other components(primers, powder, wad .If you just want to go out and shoot ,get whatever your gun will eat cheap. You'll get a lot more shooting in if you're not counting pennies while you do it. Keep that buckshot for Yotes and defence. Some guys use buckshot for deer but I don't reccomend it.

Lol probably shoulda been more specific. Im not contemplating using buckshot for trap. I just wanted to point out that im still realizing what works in my guns. Im pretty sure i got the trap loads down pat, but just started into buck shot.

9 pellet 00 buck is standard, if you are lucky you can find it for a half-decent price. I use 12 pellet 2 3\4" 00 and 2 3\4" #4 almost exclusively. I don't see the need for anything else as far as buckshot goes.

Ok, since we are on the topic, if you could choose 2 good close-range "combat" loads for self defence against, say, a charging bear, what would you go with. I've been told 000 Buck, 00 Buck, #4 Buck work well, as do slugs.

00 Buck is for 2 legs. Slugs for 4 legs. Most places buckshot is about $1.00 a shot and sold in packs of five.

All brands are pretty good. Just make sure the base is brass. The cheap aluminum ones can deform and cause problems extracting in certain guns.

In addition, where can one get rock salt and teargas shells? I'd rather Piss Off Mr. Bear than kill him.

Fixed it for you!

Rock salt shells are typically homemade. Teargas shotgun shells, sounds like a law enforcement only riot control device, I could be wrong though. Lots of neat non-lead stuff here margosupplies.com/public/canadian1/scare/12_gauge_carts.htm but it's pricy, and you're much better with a dead bear than an angry one.

This guy is an expert obviously. Listen to him and do not question...
OUCH:eek:
I just got my #1 buck mould in the mail today:D:D I mainly use it for 'yotes so should work well. I just need to find out what load the guns like. Should be good in the HP9 for blasting loads also. Well spent $40 IMHO.

Slugs/vs Buck

I have spend a fair amount of time walking rivers on the central coast and 99% of people only carry 3" slugs for anything large and furry.
I personaly dont trust the stopping power of buckshot but it does make things easyer to hit. If you can hit the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket at 25 yards with a slug or three when its coming at you at 45mph...

Awesome, thx for the tips guys. Reason i'm so intrigued is i just bought an 18.5" bbl, pistol grip and want to use it for a truck/pack gun. I just want to find what'll work best and recently i had a surgery so goin out and shootin's been outa the question :jerkit:

hey guys reading all the posts here, my dad was a member of the RCMP and has since passed away i used to ride in the police vehicles all the time, the 12 gauges back then were always loaded with SSG's he called them what were they? anyone.....

i still have a few boxs of SSG impereal shotgun shells the shot is just a littel out of round compared to buckshot thy do work great on deer out to 50yards DUTCH
