New to firearms - incoming questions....

The general consensus here seems to be that I am on the right track. This is reassuring. :)

I hadn't really considered Martin as a brand, same with Cooey - this will require more research. I will also have to consider my options in the used firearm market. Potentially there is good value for dollar. My concern with used is that my lack of experience and knowledge of what to look for might result in me purchasing someone else's problem.

I think it's fair to say that your first 4 guns should be a Marlin 795, a CZ of some flavor, a Savage MK II best you can afford, and an SKS. Remington 870 if a shotgun is on your list. What order you get them in is what you have to struggle with, if you can't afford them all at once. :)

I can't imagine being disappointed with a Savage MKII. Yeah, they're an entry level rifle, and the synthetic stock leaves a little to be desired for cheek weld with a scope, but they are plenty accurate, and the Accu-trigger is decent enough. You could do much worse for your first rifle.
 
I think you are on the right track with the initial purchase of a bolt 22 lr.. I wont offer a suggestion as I don't own one... I have 2 10-22's and a lakefield 64B (my first rifle at 16). That being said I am now looking at a heavy barrel bolt 22lr or 17hmr. My best friend has a CZ heavy and it consistently double punches the hole. I suggest buying new, that way you don't inherit somebody else's problem. Go to your local range, see if they can help you out with a selection of firearms. If not, I'm sure if during a lull in shooting while targets are changed if you spoke to owners of the rifles you are interested in, I'm sure they would allow you to take a couple of shots.
I'll echo the sentiments about the 870 tri-barrel combo... max bang for your buck.
 
absolutely look at a bolt action, cz's are great, if you are looking for learning the feng shui, but if on occasion you just want to go shooting to have fun a semi 22 is probably the most fun gun I could recommend without having to go to one of those ranges in vegas.

I asked this very question a month ago and got some really good advise and opinions. There are a lot of choices you could make, depending on budget?? I ended up deciding on a Savage MKII but when I went to get one they were sold out and I am not a patient man :) so I bought the Savage 64 semi. So far having a lot of fun with it. Just been shooting out to 50 yds with open sites but just got a scope and will be doing some 100yd stuff shortly. I am the furthest thing from experienced but in my opinion any rifle mentioned here is going to be good, and will probably fall to personal preference :)

^I get that, but if you're buying from someone on this site, check-out their "Feedback Score" and if they have lots of transactions with perfect feedback, I think you're pretty safe to buy used. I've bought used plenty of times...more than I've bought new actually. I can honestly say that I don't like the ones I bought new any more. In fact, I bought a 1968 shotgun a few years ago and I think it might be my current favorite! :)

Having read this whole thread again, I'd say you should take the plunge on something and get out shooting it. Everyone offering opinions here did that, which is why we have such strong feelings about one gun or another. Once you sink your teeth into it, you'll soon figure out what's working and what's not for you.
 
If you happen into a gun shop and they have a 10/22, BUY IT. It can be frustrating to find them because they go like hotcakes
 
if you want volume and just like shooting 500 or 100 rounds a day try a marlin XT 22lr. cheap ammo and good rifle for the money.

I prefer accuracy and quality, volume is irrelevant. I own a marlin XT 22 win mag but the ammo is quite a bit more. I don't like pop guns (22lr). my hand gun is a 45.

lol all guns are pop guns, some just pop a little louder. :)

When my licence finally comes through, I think I will be ready to purchase my first gun; but before I do, I have some questions for you here at canadiangunnutz forums.

I figure getting a .22 rifle is the best platform to start with, and to learn with. I figure that I will be doing mostly target shooting at a local range, and would like to get a consensus from the people here what I should be looking for.

I find myself leaning towards a bolt-action rifle. I know the semi-automatic rifles are actually cheaper, and apparently more common, but I figure that as a target shooter (and possibly hunter later on...) that keeping to the bolt-action platform would teach proper form/technique/feng shui.... Am I correct on this? Or should I be looking into the semi-automatics as well?

Once I am happy with my performance on my .22, I figure I will head off to shotguns or the larger rounds in rifles (again, bolt-action)...

If I am on the right path, can you recommend any rifles to start? I'm currently leaning towards a Savage Mark II, but I'm happy to take suggestions/opinions!

I've never had a problem with its accuracy. It doesn't like running Winchester bulk rounds but federals I've never had an issue.

I'd stick with a bolt, you tend to develop less problem habits with them.
 
Where you are matters. Put that in your profile.
"...recommend any rifles..." Hi. A great deal depends on your budget. Decide how much money you want to spend and what your ultimate use for a .22 will be.
"...should I be..." Bought a semi, long ago, so I could afford to be silly with it. Empty the mag fast, etc. without putting myself in the poor house. Mind you, in those days, .22's weren't terribly expensive unless you went with a European target rifle. These days you can have a semi that will give a bolt action target rifle a run, but at the expense of mods.
