just started hunting with my friends after wt deer and moose. hunting mostly down cut lines. i would like some info on what is a good all around rifle with out spending a fortune. i have used a .308 and a 300 wm . i like a bolt action. didn't care for lever action. can anybody give me some good ideas?

There's a lot of good bolt action rifles. All the major brands like Browning, Ruger, Remington, Savage, Winchester, Sako / Tikka, Marlin, TC, Howa, CZ, make good bolt action rifles. I'd suggest spending some time comparing them hands on, and rounding it down to some models you are intested in, and then asking more about them. About the only negatives I've heard are to avoid cheap package deals that include low quality scopes. There's a couple of models out there that have bad reputations, but they are fairly rare.

Is there a budget you need to stick to? You will need to buy the basic rifle, some decent scope rings / mount, and optic. Your only as good as the weakest link, but you don't need to spend a fortune to get a good basic workhorse.

I'd look at a savage 110 or a Stevens 200 depending on your budget. I have nothing but good things to say about Savage products.

For a caliber just pick something from 270, 308, or 30-06. The 300 win mag is a good round but far more powerful than you need. The three I mentioned you can buy ammunition for anywhere in the country with ease and have a great selection off the shelf.

But really the best way to pick a rifle is choose a caliber and go hold them. The one that feels good in your hands is the one you pick.

Get a 30-06 and go bag some meat. Be it deer or moose.

More than capable round, cheap and widely available ammo in many bullet weights, good rifles' selection. Doesn't come with me-me-mePnoon thou...

yep, 308 bolt action is good. be kind to yourself, don't buy cheap crap! get good stuff and you will enjoy your hunt with pride yr after yr. go look at different brands and models, you'll soon find something that spins your crank! then shop around for good used at reasonable prices. that in itself is a lot of fun! Good Luck and enjoy life to it's fullest. ;)

Nothing succeeds like hands on.
Reading will assist you greatly.
Living in Alberta there is a considerable amount of latitude from varmints, antelope, deer, elk, moose and buffalo.
If you have shot .308 Winchester and .300 WM, be causious about going outside of your comfort zone which may be one of the leading causes of "scope bite".
Start with something you are comfortable with and then practice.
After that you will contract the contagious "onegunisneverenoughitis" syndrome.
Be equally causious about asking for opinions on CGN!
