well I'm going on my first hunting trip on thanksgiving for moose. I'm a complete novice but I'm going with 2 very experienced hunters. That being said I need a hunting rifle. I've been to a couple of gun shops today and I think it maybe between two.

1. Tikka 30-06 bolt action

Or

2. Browning .270 bolt action

Both very nice rifles and both have their up's and downs. The Tikka's a bit cheaper. (Tikka $649 and the Browning is $909).

I'm basically trying to find the best all round gun, I will eventually hunt dear and bear as well with the same rifle. One of the bonuses with the .270 though is you can use it south of Hwy 9.

I'd like to hear some advice from some of the veteran hunters in here.

thanks,

Jonathan

hfp75 get a 308....( you could always load the /06 down to .308 velocities )
caster456 what are you hunting for?
Sometimes it pays to actually read the original topic:rolleyes:
There is I believe a clause in the registration that requires being over the age of 13 to register

Go with the /06. Bigger bullet that can easily be loaded to give 3100+ flbs energy. Never mind the south of #9 thing, you can always get a good varmint rifle to handle that stuff that shoots flatter and is way nicer to shoot. Moose are big fellows remember and actually they are purty much the largest game on our continent with the exception of very very few bears.

If you're going to face calibre restrictions in areas you will hunt in, then I would go with the .270, but that would be just about the only reason.

I think the .30-06 would provide just a bit more oomph for the larger game animals that you are planning to go for. Don't get me wrong, both are excellent choices, but I think the .30-06 would be a little more versatile, unless of course it will really cut down your choice of hunting areas due to regulations... While I'm at it, I might as well state the obvious and say that it's a stupid regulation (I'm guessing it's a < .30 rule?).

a tikka or remington bolt action rifle in .308 , .270 , or .30-06 will serve you well for any game in canada (excluding brown and white bears and bison). don't forget to invest in some good glass. (I like the leupold scopes)

if you're hunting in ontario, I would take the .270. will do anything the .30-06 will for your provincial game animals, and you can you it in the south of the province.

I'd say get the Browning 270 and e-mail me where that store is. I'll go and buy the Tikka 30-06 right away. :)
Seriously... A Tikka 30-06 for $650? What a deal! Get the Tikka and you won't regret it.
I have a Tikka Whitetail De Luxe in 338 Win. Mag. It's an awesome rifle.
BTW, my 30-06 is a Remington BDL which is also a very reliable and accurate rifle but the quality of the Tikka is just so much better.

The Tikka it is! I actually just got off te phone with my wife's uncle ( one of the hunters) and he said that they all use .30-06 It's the best all round gun. Btw that Tikka is from Basspro shops, they tend to have the best prices I have found so far.

thanks,

Jonathan

Just thought to mention that in SW Ontario where there is a less than .276 caliber restriction there is no centerfire Deer season anyway. In those populated areas it's shotguns and m/l only. To set up a moose rifle with lower power scopes and heavier bullets will disapoint you in the varmint fields so you might just as well get two guns rather than one that is mediocre at both jobs.
The /06 is less money and a harder hitter.
The .270 is not even close to the .244's and .224's as a varmint rifle for the "south of #9 shooting"

Congrats on a good choice and GOOD Huntin:D

Tikka is some quality stuff. I was checking out a few last month. Very fine looking rifles!

You won't be sorry you bought one. I like the Remington 700 as well. Another fine rifle.

My vote is 30-06 as I have heard nothing but good thing's about this round.

OR, if you want to save yourself 500 bucks, go buy yourself a bubba Lee Enfield. they shoot .303. Many a moose have been taken with those old WW2 rifles. Just a suggestion.

Good luck on the moose hunt!
