My son is 7 and love the outdoors doors and I want to get his first gun so we can hunt rabbit or small game to start ant suggestions on what type of guns we should get?

I not sure how long before I can get access to the EE page to buy my first gun I am super excited for the time to come.

Welcome to CGN. If your new to firearms as well as hunting I suggest you start with a 22 rimfire bolt action rifle with a decent scope then join a range and practice your marksmanship to the point where you can consistently take the game you are after cleanly. Check the hunting regulations foe Alberta, I'm sure they are online just like here. As for taking a 7 year old hunting, until he is familiar with the safe handling of a firearm which very few kids his age are capable of maybe take him along on the small game hunts but refrain from having him shoot at game .There are probably regulations for how old a child can be to hunt ( in Saskatchewan its 12 years old to get a licence after a hunter safety course).

Hey Rauly! Welcome to the forums. One of my good friends/coworker is from St. Lucia.

Good advice from the previous guy. Start small and work your way up. Once your comfortable with firearms you could get something like a 7mm-08 which has lots of knock down power with very little recoil. Once your son is ready to hunt with you that would be a good caliber for him to use as well.

You could get a good pellet gun to teach him firearm safety and practice with targets, then move up to a 22LR. From there a 410 with light 2 1/2" loads would be a nice step up.

No reason you can’t go straight to deer, YouTube will show you everything you need to know. My honest advice as a guy who’s guided lots of first timers at work outfitting and am myself always learning, is just dive in, stay legal, and learn as you go. Watch every video you can, and head out, we all learn by failing so don’t get down on yourself. Have fun! There are resources available now we didn’t have when we started.

Check local bylaws, an airgun might be the best start for the kid to learn to shoot if you don't have to take it to a range. But some places, e.g. the city where I live, prohibit shooting airguns. The bigger the town the more likely they are to ban them, partly because of concern over wasting police time when people who don't know better panic and call in "I think I saw a kid with an assault rifle!"
